Sterilizing

HI again. You will find that I ask alot of questions so I hope I do not become annoying!?? Let me know if I do. My questiom is about sterilizing. Is it necessary to keep sterilizing feeding bowls & spoons or can I just wash & dry normally? The Cjild & Youth Health web-site says you have to dry & use straight away if any drops of water left on equipment then you have to re-wash! These seems ridiculous to me? What do you think? I figure that my baby get's germs from me & the carpet anyway so why wrry about this????Too many things to worry about as it is as a first time mum. My son is 5 months old.

Sterilizing

My first time Mum's group recommended we only washed bottles etc. in hot soapy water and rinsed and that was that, just like any other dish.  She said that childrens immune systems were being degraded by a sterile enviroment from birth, instead of allowing their systems to get used to things.

I didn't sterislise after I heard that (about week 3 of her birth I think), and my daughter got sick for the first time ever 2 months ago (on our moving day no less....which it helped their timing. LOL) and she was 14 months old.  Not bad, and it made sense to me, and personally it worked for us.

When i was a first time mum i steralized everything but once they are mobile it's nest to impossible. By the time no 4 came along she was lucky i washed my hands lol.  I wouldn't fuss about it, and as my mum always said " a bit of dirt never hurt anyone"

Honey you are not annoying! :) The only things I sterilised were the bottles when I went to formula, and even then not after about 6 months. As the others have said, babies end up sticking everything in their mouths, so you have a lot more to worry about than a coupla germs. Leisa

Hi there!

Firstly, you r not annoying...this is what Minti is about..asking questions!!

As for sterilizing, I probably wouldn't bother anymore seeing your child is 5months. It is impossible to sterilize EVERYTHING that goes in their mouths. He will be crawling soon if he isn't already so you can just imagine what he will put in his mouth then!

I have found with our friends who are very fussy about cleanliness that they  have a child who is continually sick and those who are a little more relaxed about shiny floors, generally have a child that rarely catches a cold!

If you are concerned about steralizing though, maybe just put your bowls, spoons ect under some hot/boiling water. Cheers Jo

I don't think you have to keep sterilizing everything still. I have an 8 month old and I just wash and dry  as normally would be done with my own dishes. I have been doing this since she was 4 months old and started eating cereal. So if I were you I wouldn't follow every single website that you read up on because they may all give different advice. I have four children, three which are my own and I can tell you this I have the same thing with all of my children and they are all healthy and growing the way they need to be.

Sterilizing

I have never sterilized anything of my daughters except when they were first bought.  She never had dummies or bottles and her feeding bowls/spoons were washed thoroughly under hot water and left to air dry before using.  I was told that drying a tea-towel is really bad because of the bacteria on the tea towels and air-drying is best.  Suits me just fine! I wash and leave then put away after an hour or so hehehe.

by the way, you aren't getting annoying
