How is Factor V Leiden treated during pregnancy?
click the link to go to the website that I found this on

Women carrying two genes for Factor V Leiden will need to receive treatment with a heparin anticoagulant medicine during pregnancy. The same applies to women carrying just one gene for Factor V Leiden who have previously had a blood clot themselves or who have a family history of blood clots.

All women carrying a gene for Factor V Leiden may need to wear special stockings to prevent clots during the last half of pregnancy. After the birth of the child they may be prescribed the anticoagulant drug heparin.

I have it. I carry only one gene. I didn't know it until I developed a blog clot after the birth of my second daughter. I got my clot in the upper arm so it went undecteded for 5 days. Ug. I'm just glad they finally figured out what was going on and got me on Heparin immediately and then they switched me to Warfarin which I continued for 6 months after that.

My doctor said if I were to get pregnant again that I would have to be on one of those anticoagulants for the pregnancy. I don't plan to have another baby so I haven't looked into that part of it much. I know I can no longer be on any hormones (birth control, etc) and there are other things I have to keep in mind as well throughout my life. It's just kind of strange.

Sounds like you found a good article monarogirl. At least when you know you have it, you can take the proper precautions and your doctors can keep a careful eye on you.
