heart palpitations

this isnt related to minti but i need to know if anyone suffers the same thing

For 2 weeks now i have been suffering heart palpitations. i finally went to the dr on tuesday and he said that all was fine just stress and low iron. I went to the hospital that night as they were continous for about 30 mins so went then they lasted for about two hours after that. dr there said that he did see them on the ecg. they did all the tests and he said he foud a heart mumer but i had nothing to worry about. the palpitations are normal im just having the so often. I was glad as i felt as if i was going crazy. glad that they caught them. When i vbisited my dr earlier in the day the usual thing happened they disappeared and my hert sounded fine to him.

In hospital my heart rate was at 125ish and bp 153/90. it settled down to 90-100beats pm and bp went down to 113/67. they sent me on my way. They were friendly and supportive.

They feel like my heart stops and thumps back into place but feels like it beats hard and fast. He said he knows that they feel scary but i have to know there was nothing wrong with my heart (other than the murmer)and i would be fine.

Does anyone else have this? I need to know im not alone.

It is REALLY scary when it happens! I used to get the odd one when I drank too much caffeine, however I went through a period of about 2 months where I had them all the time. I'd lie in bed and it would feel really strange, but it only lasted a  few minutes. However it escalated until one day they didn't go away after an hour or so, I went to the local clinic ( nearest hospital is nearly 300km away) and they couldn't find anything and sent me on my way. They still hadn't stopped a couple of hours lated and I was feeling quite light headed and a bit nauseous so I went back They did a portable ECG and the nurse freaked out. ( THAT REALLY sent my heart rate through the roof!) He called in another nurse and spoke to the DMO at the hospital, gave me a shot of something and then they drove me in the ambulance to the Hospital ( 300km away) I had all sorts of tests ( and wouldn't you know it, they never happened again while I was in hospital for the next few days!) I was referred to a Specialist and continued to have more tests over the next few months - I had to wear a halter monitor a few times and did a stress test. They assure me there is nothing wrong, just "one of those things"

My advice would be to ask for a referral to a specialist, make sure you get thoroughly checked out and this will help put your mind at ease. Just insist to your doctor that you want a referal. Better to be safe than sorry! I am pleased to say that I have never had an episode like that again, however if I am tired and stressed, I do still get brief palpitations.

I have palpitations every so often and they make me take a step back.  I believe mine are from my condition, Fibrimyalgia.  It caused me to have a heart murmer too.  I know that when it happens, I get like this adrenaline feeling rush, and my heart feels like it is beating out of my chest.  My dr said that my heart is great, I even had an ultrasound several years ago.   I would just watch for any new symptoms and tell the dr right away.

Sorry I made a mistake lol it's called SVT. It means supraventricular tachycardia. It's pretty much just your heartrate taking off really fast without any warning. Beta blockers are a medication that affects yournerve impulses to reduce your heartrate. I generally do have to go to the doctors everytime it happens because I can't get it to stop. It hasn't affected my ability to have children but while I am pregnant it does get worse. Apparently when it happens while pregnant it reduces the amount of oxygen going to the baby so it's something to be careful about. Once again sorry for my earlier mistake.

thank you. wow that sounds even scarier! can i ask though what is RSV and whats a beta blocker. The dr said he could give me medication to stop the palpitations but he would let the specialist give them to me as the specialist will give me a heart monitor for 24 hours so he can track my heart rate, he will make sure this isnt the start of something unfolding  and then give me medication(the dr is certain there is nothing to worry about)to stop them or make them not so noticable.Do you go to the dr every time iy happens? how often does it happen? would it affect you having more children?

Hi Natz.  I am a nurse, a cardiac nurse, and would suggest keeping an eye on the palpitations.  I don't want to say too much and scare you or make you think they are something they aren't but also don't want to not tell you.  Know what I mean?

I would just say to you to monitor the frequency and duration and if you think they are changing and happening more often and for longer, talk to your doctor.  Persist with your doctor.

If you want more information, minti mail me and I will be happy to talk to you about things.

All the best.
Angela

heart palpitations

thatnks, have emailed you...

Just like to clarify tho, the dr at the hospital said my hear was beating normally, proper rythym weith a slight murmur but nothing to be alarmed about. the heart has a muscle at the back or somethjing and thats whats making me feel like it stops. Its not stopping just the muscle is contracting with makes me feel like its thumping....hope that makes sense
