My son has a cold and he cant sleep longer than 20 min, at most. He is only 6 weeks old. I have already elivated his bed at one end, and it has not done anything for him. I wanted to use vicks but its too harsh for his baby skin, then I heard of baby vicks, but its only ok to use when they are at least 3 months old. Is there any thing that i can do for him?! PLEASE HELP!!
My youngest got a real bad cold b4 i even left the hospital so what they did was use a vaporiser in my room with vixcks in it and put vicks on the singlet and used saline drops and nasal sucker. It did wonders and got some sleep. But everyone elses comments are good. Somethings work on some and not on others so just have to try.
i agree with another person, breastmilk up th nose its a natural decongestant also the vix in hot bowl of water in the room will help, prop a towel under the top of bubs mattress so his head is not flat that was he will breath easier, good luck.
I had to take my son to emergency at 2 weeks because of a cold and he was having trouble breathing. They suggested saline drops for up the nose which did help so much. We used Fess nasal drops.
I used baby vicks from day one it didnt hurt my baby. But if your too worried about that then just rub a little bit on his singlet. Also putting vicks on the bottom of his feet is a good idea it goes through there whole body. Make sure you use a vapouriser i dont know where i would be without mine. Or you can also buy vicks plug ins at the chemist.
I agree with melibrad. I used vicks for my daughter from day 1...my mum's advice. She also advised me on rubbing vicks on bottom of my daughter's feet, which I did. Good luck.
If you do not have a vapouriser put vicks into a hot bowl of water and melt it. Put it in a safe place like under the cot or anywhere you know won't be a cause of harm and the vapours will help... goodluck.
My daughter at about a month old stopped breathing whilst on my boob due to a blocked nose then when she came too she had a full on panic atack, which scared the crap out of me. She couldn't work out that she could breath through her mouth if her nose was blocked. I wish soemone had warned me that this could happen, because it was the scariest thing.
In desperation I put vicks on her singlet because thats all I had, it cleared her up very quickly and did nothing to her skin, and even if it had it would have been worth it, no point having a clear skinned dead baby, I'd rather have a rashy alive one.
The next day I went and bought Nyle infant nose drops from the supermarket. I think every new Mum should have this on her in preparation and I have told many of my friends to get some just in case ever since this happened to me. I don't know why they don't mention it in your pre-natal classes.................just another thing they don't think to mention.
But that's what I did and it worked. I also put eucalyptus in a humidifier and put some on tissues which I stuck under her cot sheet. I also propped (she went straight into a cot, not a bassinet) her cot mattress up with a blanket underneith it and stuck her in her sleeping bean bag to stop her from slliding down.
I had heard years ago that sticking vicks on the soles of your feet is a pressure point thing so I did that too, she got over it pretty quick.
I agree definatly use nyal nose drops if his nose is blocked it clears it up straight away. And it is NON MEDICATED which is a bonus because it means you can use it as often as you need to.
I used to use (and still do!) TIXYLIX Chest Rub ointment. I found that it wasn't as harsh as Vicks to put on them. Available at the chemist, but it doesn't say on there an age limit. I am pretty sure I used it on them that young. But if you go to the chemist, they can advise you whether it is safe. I remember asking them and that is what they recommended. Also used a vapouriser both in the bedroom and in the lounge where they spend their time.
We did a few things when ours had a cold. We used the vicks vapors (it plugs into the wall), a humidifier, stood in the hot shower with her (her not getting wet, just in the steam), gave her tylenol (to help with any aches or pains), and made sure to keep her nose very cleaned out, at least 4 times a day. The doctor said you basically have to ride it out, but this stuff helped a lot.
Try a vapuoriser, no too close though. Also, if you are breastfeeding squirt a little milk up his nose every time you feed him. I know this may sound yucky but it really works! Antibodies in the milk will kill of the germs & unblock the nose. Hope this helps!
A couple of drops of eucalyptus on a tissue near but now to close to his head and socks on his feet. There are also pediatric nasal drops which I used when my kids were babies to dry up runny noses.
I have the baby vicks here in my hand and it does say for babies 3 months of age.
have you got a steam vapouriser? I used it when my child was a little one , you can also get that from the chemist
you could also go get little fess for noses from the chemist , it also has a little sucker in the box so you can suck all the gunk out of your babies nose .
i also sprinkle a little Double D eucalyptus oil on the floor in my babies room, its strong so only a few drops on the floor ,
when in doubt just go to your doc to make sure theres not anything else that is bothering your baby or something else they can suggest ,,,
I used to put a little vicks onto a tissue and slide it between the sheet and madam's cot mattress or pillow slip and pillow. Found that this helped her to breath as she was still breathing in the vicks without having to put it on her skin.
Hope this helps in some small way.

P.S hope your little gets better really soon. Hugs to you and yours xoxo
