Can anyone advise? My baby is nearly 10 months and is not rolling, crawling or weight bearing.

I am starting to really worry. My daughter who is nearly 10 months was born by C-section as she was breach. Her hips were scanned soon after birth  and were not dislocated. She sits well unsupported, but can only roll from her back to her tummy and calls for rescue as she cannot roll back. I've tried leaving her as the health visitor advised, but this has not helped. She is also not showing any signs of crawling and when I try to encourage her to bear weight all she does is kicks her legs. Should I be concerned and is there anything I can do to encourage her to crawl or weight bear?

Thank you all for your advice!  I do feel reassured. I think I will however get her checked out by a doctor incase there is a problem with her hips.

Thanks again!!!

Re: Can anyone advise? My baby is nearly 10 months and is not rolling, crawling or weight bearing.

Please don't worry.  My son, who was born vaginally, didn't crawl until around 11 months and that was commando.  He didn't crawl on all 4's until maybe 13 months.  He is now almost 16 months and getting very near walking.  Please read my advice on this subject.  Have a bit of a search through advice for more topics on this issue.  Good luck and really, don' worry!

Re: Can anyone advise? My baby is nearly 10 months and is not rolling, crawling or weight bearing.

My son was also breach and delivered by emergency C section as it was not diagnosed until the last minute! (i won't go into that one!!)  I had the same fears as you ... but do not worry! My son  is 11.5 months old and has only been crawling for the last 3 weeks. He hated being on his tummy and would not hold his head up when placed on his tummy, I tried not to worry about it and he did it himself when he gained the confidence.

We found that the fisher price jumperoo was fantastic for weight bearing and was really good entertainment. My son loves his push along toy and will walk all around the house with that. Hope this helps

Re: Can anyone advise? My baby is nearly 10 months and is not rolling, crawling or weight bearing.
I wouldn't worry, my neice didn't crawl until she was 11 1/2 years old. If I were you I would help her roll over, do some exercises. For example, if she is laying on her back, gently pull one leg to the side she needs to roll to, let her do the rest. When she is on her tummy do the same thing, just get her started and then let her finish. If she is sitting up, take her arm and pull it down to help her know how to get into the crawling position. I wouldn't worry! My sister in law was worried, they went to a physical therapist and there was nothing wrong, she is just LAZY! You could also try to bribe her to roll or move with a food she likes or toy placed a little out of reach.

Re: Can anyone advise? My baby is nearly 10 months and is not rolling, crawling or weight bearing.

Babies do these things in their own time. If you are giving your little darling heaps of tummy time to develop the right muscles you are doing the right thing. Maybe see a physio who will identify if there is a physical problem. Heavier babies do things later sometimes because they have more weight to manoever. Don't be too quick to help out. The health visitor is right about leaving her (not forever). Crying won't hurt her but not learning to crawl may. It seems mean but sometimes you have to be for your baby's best interests. If you only had to whinge to get what you wanted that's what you learn to do . Pretty smart really as it is most effective with least effort. Try putting favourite toys just out of reach. Try putting your hands behind baby's toes when on tummy to teach them to dig their toes in to the floor (necessary for crawling). Don't expect immediate results as it takes time to build the right muscles and co-ordination. Also helpful are bi-lateral and cross-lateral exercises. e.g. touch same hand to same toe, then opposite hand to touch opposite foot. This helps the brain deal with the motions of crawling that need the cross-lateral movement. Can be really fun keeping a beat to favourite music.

See a physio or doc. first to check baby then ask for some more advice such as the above that you can work on at home. Crawling is an important stage of discovery that it is desirable not to miss. Good luck Sylwia, don't worry too much (hard as it is), just take the necessary action to assure yourself all is OK.

Re: Can anyone advise? My baby is nearly 10 months and is not rolling, crawling or weight bearing.

Hi, I was a congenital hip baby and it was when I was unable to do some things that my mother knew something was wrong. This was 35 yrs ago so I am not sure if they really checked things out back then.I have a friend with an 8 month old baby that has just had to wear a brace for 5 months as she has a condition also, and was not picked up on a regular x-ray but was picked up with an ultrasound. Her mother also had the same hip problem as me.If there is nothing wrong all babies are different and she may be just a little slower to reach her milestones ,But if you feel there is really something wrong continue to take her to the dr's to be checked out again.

                                                                      Good luck Cham

Re: Can anyone advise? My baby is nearly 10 months and is not rolling, crawling or weight bearing.

my first child didn't do a great deal until the week before her first birthday and then everything came on at once!!!

the description of your child sounds just like her, so i'd say... don't worry.

my daughter first crawled the week of her birthday then six weeks later she was walking!!!!

as long as all the arms and legs are moving and baby can do other things like sit and support their own head then i'm sure that there's absolutely nothing to worry about.

lol and take care.

Re: Can anyone advise? My baby is nearly 10 months and is not rolling, crawling or weight bearing.

you can encourage her by having toys out for her that she will have to reach to ,

ie.. if shes on her tummy place the toys just a little out of arms reach and sit behind the toys

something colourful or that makes a soft noise that will make her want to push herself along the floor to get it

also on her back have the toys either side of her so she will have to turn slighlty to grab them also ..this will help with the rolling to the side

mine didnt start crawling till ten and a half months and it was backwards ,

as long as there if no health problems they will do it when they feel ready also .and they can  get tied easly  from this .
