Has anyone else had a child with a tongue tie? We had no end of problems as a baby because of it and now I am meant to be watching his speech - but I don't really know what I am watching for? Any ideas?
Hi. Rylan (1 yr) has a tongue tie. We were made to see a speech pathologist in the hospital when I had him. We got given tips for feeding him, and told basically not to worry about it, unless by the age of 2 he still isn't speaking.
Every doctor's visit I ask about it. As he is a little slow and not really talking yet we will have to wait a while before we know how it's going. We were told by the doctor that it is relatively simple to fix if it does need to be done... local anaesthetic and cut the tie(OUCH!!!).

- you won't be able to breastfeed
- tips for which bottles to use
- keep an eye on it and if you are worried about speech come back
The bottle tips were useful, but after much agonising and lots of advice from different sources we did manage to breastfeed. So far I think speech is good - there are just a few small issues I think are age related but I am not sure. But he was certainly talking by 2 and had a good vocabulary. So at least I know that is OK. Interesting your dr said it is a simple thing to fix - that is what all the nurses told me but the paed. just told me "we don't do it any more". Obviously different opinions but I wish I had asked around a bit more.
I am tongue tied and my speech is fine.
I think what they mean is to watch just in case he need speech therepy. this would be lisps (sluring of "s" and other letters that they can not say properly.) my son can not say "L"'s Properly and he is 5 and we are waiting for speech therepy. He is not tongue tied.
I would be taking note of all the words he says and if you feel that he is saying them correctly or not.
You can also take him and get the webbing cut and this will eliminate this, but as i said i am tongue tied and have no problems with speech, and i will add i never have had a problem with speech.
He turns 4 next week - he speaks very well and very clearly but as you say there are certain sounds he struggles with, which may be normal for his age. I've asked pre-school to keep an eye on him if they think we need to get him into speech therapy as there is currently a 12mth wait at our local health centre (unless you go private).
He had problems feeding but we got there in the end and it helped stretch it, but in many ways I wish we had snipped it. i was told it was not done anymore, but I know other people who had it done. To do it now would be a trauma, I think.
A little girl I worked with had that. I worked with her mum too at the daycare centre. Her vocabulary and everything was good. She had problems with breastfeeding but was still able to do it. The girl's pronounciation was a little off, but very understandable though. That place was shut down due to low attendance (grrr) and I haven't seen her for a while. She is the same age as my daughter and while she had some problems, you could still get what she was saying if you listened.
I don't know a lot, but a friend of mine has a son who is tongue tied. She has had no trouble with him - except she couldn't breastfeed - and he is almost 5. He speaks well and does everything normally.
