Bathtime

I was just wondering how everyone else bathes their babies during winter. At the moment it is 13 degrees in our house and it's not getting any warmer. My daughter(10mo) usually has a bath late afternoon but lately it's just been too cold to undress her let alone bath her. We have just been wiping her down with a warm cloth but we can't do that for the whole of winter lol. If anyone has any ideas about how to keep them warm it would be a great help.

Re: Bathtime
funny i was going to write the exact same question :)
my house is cold as! day and night... i think the best thing to do is to sponge bath baby on days like these, and i am so weiry about portable heaters its not funny lol! my bathroom is right down the other end of the house and the wall heater only heats the lounge-room.
i also wrap a hot water bottle up and tuck it under his sheets before bedtime its really helped alot keeping him warm at night and his raspy cough has stopped in the mornings...

xx

Re: Bathtime

I also heat the nedrooms up with oil heaters, but I would be careful about putting his clothes on the heater as they can catch fire very easily.

I find that giving them a bath heats them up, undress them in the bathroom and be sure to have pyjamas out ready before they get out.

I also have beddy bears for both of my children, which are teddy bear wheat bags. They are great for kids when they need some comfort in bed and heat up the bed at the same time (if you can get them off the children long enough)

Re: Bathtime
I used a little fan heater too.  It was plugged into a socket in the bedroom opposite and sat right at the door as we have had no power points in any of the houses we've lived it.  It is instant heat and needn't be on for too long.  I've also had mine having a shower for a long time as the noise from the bathtub when the plug was taken out was too scary for her.  I used to sit the towel just next to the bath tub where it wouldn't get wet, and where the heat from the heater could warm it and her clothes were on top of it. She was only in there for 5 or 10 minutes.  Then I'd take her out, dry her with the toasty warm towel and dress her in her toasty warm winter pjs.  I didn't notice a huge jump in the power bill either as we only did this for a few weeks (we live in North Qld and don't get much winter) and we are doing this again at the moment, it's been 11 degrees inside our house and probably dropped because that was taken at 6:30pm.  Yesterday and today I put our clothes in the dryer for 5 minutes before putting them on just to make them warm instead of pulling out the heater. I guess it uses roughly the same amount of power but seemed easier to use the dryer.  That way she's getting dressed into warm clothes in the morning.  I hope you figure something out, this weather is disgusting!  ps, I'm a cold woos too hehehe

Re: Bathtime
We use a combination of the advice you have already recieved.
We have an oil heater which we put on in her room an hour or so before bath time (and close the door) then we also have a cheap dodgy heater in the bathroom which heats up really quick so we undress her on front on that and pass her into the shower. She then either has a shower with either of us, or we have the plug in and she has a little bath which we are showering (all soap and shampoo is done before she comes in though). We then wrap her up in her towel and go back to her room which is nice and warm and dress her in there for bed.
Works well for us. Hope you find what works for you!

Re: Bathtime

hi, we used one of those inexpensive to buy but expensive to run little electric fan heaters.  You need it for such a short amount of time that the cost of it isn't very much at all.  I had a change table on wheels.  I would set the heater up in the bathroom turn it on close the door and run the bath, while all that was going on I'd grab her p.j's or what ever, her hoody towel etc and lay her on the change table and wheel it all into the bathroom (I backed in as it left little room to get around)  turn off the water un dress bub in the now toasty warm bathroom and giver her bath (about 10 mins) dry her off, lotion get her dressed on the change table then turn off the heater and pack it away into the bathroom cupboard.  It ran for approx 20 mins and at that point I bathed her every night...I didn't notice any huge jump in our power bill and it's almost instant heat in that small room.......I then used to go and jump in the shower myself whilst the bathroom was still warm coz I'm a cold woose LOL.

I'd do it that way again, so personally I reckon it's the way to go.

Re: Bathtime
Hi, the oil filled column heaters are fantastic. We have a wood fire that keeps the house pretty warm but the bathroom is always shut (due to little fingers!) so we use one in there - we just transfer it from the boys room to the bathroom about 1/2 hour before bath time, then put it back in their room.

Re: Bathtime

hi my son is 16 mo and i bath him with me we only have a very small bath or we shower with plug in the steam keeps him warm with the bath room door shut and then i leave him in the bath while i put my pjs on while watching him all the time (back wards or in side out pjs are the norm lol)  then pull him out and dry him off then nappy and pjs. or i dress him in front of the heater. hope that has helped a little.

he loves the shower and has done since 10 months as he doesnt always want to sit in the tub.

Re: Bathtime
Our house was really cold this winter, the heating could not cope with the unusually cold temperatures! I invested in an oil filled radiator and I put it on in my son's bathroom about 30 mins before bathtime and as soon as it was warm in there I transfered it to my son's bedroom to warm his room up before he got into bed. I hate portable heaters as I always think they are dangerous, but I never leave it on overnight or unattended for too long, but this worked well for us.

Re: Bathtime

Hey! We live in a really cold house. I take my 17 month old in the shower with me in the morning. I don't know if that would suit you, but it certainly suits me. I've been taking her in the shower since about 10 months as she doesn't like to go in the bath while she sees me in the shower. You could try this just for winter! Good luck with it - winter is an awful time of the year!
