Prepare for home schooling

I am a christian and am considering home schooling my 2 year old (when he is ready for school) as I do not beleive in the evolution theory and the closest school that teaches the creation story is 30 minutes away.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas as to how I could prepare my 2 year old for home schooling and kindy?

Re: Prepare for home schooling

I say DUE DILIGENCE :-) do a bunch of research on the net.  I recommend finding home schooling blogs that discuss experiences and review curriculum.  Something like Christian Homeschooling Help.  Also read a few books like Dumbing Us Down by John Taylor Gatto and Home School by Borg Hendrikson.

BOO! my logan is being home schooled kindy atm you can start home schooling as early as you want but there is not much help for pre grade one from the cirriculum council. i write my own cirriculum based on all the stuff that they need to know before grade one. homeschooling is great at this age because you can explore so many diferent subjects, it is all about teaching your child how to learn and enjoy it. (although logan would love to spend all his school time playing maths games and painting, we do do a fair bit of phonics and pre reading skills) phys ed is sending him out to spa with his daddy on his weekend and he is learning some swahilli for LOTE. we do science experiments like making slime, bubble science, states of matter and basic weather/seasons stuff. (i have a passion for science and he loves to learn how things work) if you want to include religious study as part of your cirriculum some great ways are to hold plays for friends and family based on stories in the bible or perhaps as a christmas thing make a baby jesus scene from recyclables like decorated cardboard boxes and wooden peg people dressed with scraps of fabric and wool.  you could follow with a discussion about baby jesus and  what sort of things he may have done as a child... hope this is what you were looking for... minti mail me back if you need any more help
ps: there are also alot of websites with free printables, they are usually american based so you will have to ajust for age but i am sure there are christian ones out there that would suit your particular needs.
::)'s for you MAB! (becca)

Re: Prepare for home schooling
I went to a state school and only did evolution in year 11 for human biology and many people were upset by this and I understand that. They actually have a religious instruction class which you can choose whether they go to or not. I think you should ask the teachers if you do decide against home school cause I don't think they even have evolution in the curriculum.

Re: Prepare for home schooling

I am slightly further down the track as I have a two and a four year old, but I don't think there is any preparing them at this age for school.  He knows one day he will go to big school like the neighbour, my four year old does, but the two yo has no idea, I think stick with understanding that is age appropriate.

I haven't decided where I will send my kids to school or looked into what is taught, but one thing I can say is as a public schooled child my faith and belief in creation had nothing to do with what was taught at school, rather other influences, and I know many kids who have gone both ways not based on where they went to school.

I don't want my kids growing up in a bubble and if they live in the world I want them to have the confidence to speak their convictions and  say no to what they know is wrong.  But this is jsut an opinion and i TOTALLY respect that you want to home school and applaud you for doing it, I don't have the sanity.

Some food for thought though, my son goes to Sunday School (the 4 yo) and kinder and childcare one day a week, we have a number of other influences around including some neighbours who we like but who share VERY different values, and my 4yo commented this morning that it kept raining and said "Is God just wasting water?" then this afternoon he said to me "Jesus does just live in heaven and heaven is a long way away, isn't it mum? Cause Jesus did just die on a big wooden cross and come back to life again and then went to heaven, didn't he mum?".  I am not trying to get you to change your mind, just letting you see that there is more than one way to approach things.

Best wishes for the coming years, whatever you choose.

Jodi

Re: Prepare for home schooling
I'm not too sure how to home school through kindy but I believe member RebeccaDorant is homeschooling her son through kindy or maybe it's Prep.  I thought it started in Prep, where I live it only starts in Prep so maybe it varies from state to state.  I have an interview with 3 of the Catholic schools around here.  One of them is 5 minutes down the road, one of them is 40 minutes away but is near where I work, and the other is only 20 minutes from my house but in the opposite direction to where I work, which is then about another 30 minutes from the school.  I'm prepared to travel to one of those schools, I just have to work out which one is the best for us. There are other Catholic schools around but the travel time would be much the same, and I've narrowed it down to these 3.  I think homeschooling is a good thing but I also think that for me the travel would be well worth it.  And I'd look into whether or not homeschooling can be done for Kindy or if it does start at Prep.  I think having structured activities at home would be a good start, say have puzzles at this time and playdough at this time and stories at this time, if you get what I mean.  Hope some of this helps.

Re: Prepare for home schooling

I have to say that none of my children have ever been 'taught' the evolution theory at school. Not even in science studies at high school. Nor have they been taught the creation story in anything but their religious education lessons. They have all attended State Schools and religious education is a choice, you don't have to go to it.
