Milk coming out of the nose and mouth: What can it be?

One of my girls gave me a scare last night. An hour and a half after feeding, she woke up from her sleep fussy. I checked on her and she couldn't breathe because milk was coming out of her mouth and nose. I held her upright and then suctioned her nose and she was fine.  After that, I made sure to put her on side to sleep in case it happens again.

This morning her sister did the same thing. She sounded like she has a bad cold when she breathe so I checked on her and found milk was coming out of her nose too.

I make sure I burp them several times when they feed, and this still happens. I will phone the pediatrician first thing Monday morning, but in the meantime, anyone have ideas on why this is happening? Could it be acid reflux?

Tilt the bottle on the side as it can go up their nose like when we drink soft drink.

Re: Milk coming out of the nose and mouth: What can it be?

The girls have been seen by the nurse practitioner today and I was told that with everything I've described, that they do have reflux. The girls have been prescribed Zantac to be used 2x a day for 3-4 days. And if it things doesn't improve, I will have to thicken their formula with a teaspoon of formula (they are still on preemie formula supplementation with breastfeeding). And if things still do no improve, there is a "big gun" medication that they could be on.

Thanks for the suggestions and thoughts, everyone!

Are they still having formula feeds? Maybe it's the type of formula, could be just not staying down as it should. Good luck.

Yes, they are still on preemie formula and would still be on it for a few more weeks.

Re: Milk coming out of the nose and mouth: What can it be?

my children have done this before and neither of them had acid reflux!

i think it just happens if wind gets trapped and then comes up suddenly bringing milk with it!

if the child doesn't open his/her mouth then the milk will come out of his/her nose or if there is a lot of it and it comes up with force then it may come both ways!

i have a low chair that is slighty tilted and has a vibrate setting that i used to put baby in after feeding and burping, this helped releases any wind that was trapped it was amazing how much more burps came up whilst  baby was sat there!

any how if you're concerned it is a good idea to talk to your dr he/she should be able to put your mind at rest.

lol to you all, lisa xxxx.

Re: Milk coming out of the nose and mouth: What can it be?

A baby I used to care for all day (Mum came hime to breast feed every 4 hours) was like that, I had to sit her up right for a min. of 20 mins after each feed,   Bit more of a halleng with two not to mention Matthew wanting your attention as well.  do you have those bouncer things tilted flatish things infants lay in during the day???

one of these things...I don't know what you'd call them in the states.   As they have the bubs slightly ellevated, I'm thinking they might help...infant tummy bubbles can play very hard to get.  You did everything right though, well done on not panicking.  let us know what your Pediatrician says. xo

Re: Milk coming out of the nose and mouth: What can it be?
I had one of these but mine vibrated. It worked wonders. On both the gas and mine had reflux too. Even if it is reflux it isn't anything to seious to worry about. Easily managable and most bubs grow out of by 6 mths old. And like everyone is saying if you aqre really concerned see your CHN.
Good luck and let us know how you geton.

It is in fact reflux and Zantac has been prescribed. Thank you for letting me know of your experience, especially the thought that it isn't something that is serious and that they grow out of it. Phew!

Re: Milk coming out of the nose and mouth: What can it be?

I used to have the same thing happen to Samuel, I was told he was being overfed and that was ahy he was a spewy baby and on these occasions he had an excess amount of wind so when he spewed it came out his nose also. I think it distresses us parents more than the babies, it may be uncomfortable but as soon as it is over htey forget about it.

I used to put Samuel on his side or his tummy due to his spewyness.

Yeh I agree that overfeeding can cause it but prob not an hour and half after the feed. You handled it well though. I had a similar scare when Carden was 5 weeks old. He had a tummy bug ang was vomiting small amounts of mucus/bile every few mins - problem was it was so thick it was choking him. I would be inclined to put something under the babies mattress to raise their head slightly while sleeping. That's what you do if they have reflux and/or blocked noses so should work in your case too.
