Congested

Hi Everyone, i would love some help.. My 6mth old baby has a cough and congested chest.. here in Kenya there is no medicine for babies under 1years and people are saying 'just give her half the dose for a 1yr old' i really dont like the sound of that as the bottle says NOT to be given to babies under 1year! I would rather wait it out, but i though some of you may have some tips to make Jaida a bit more comfortable.. also what age can u apply vicks to the chest?

Please help...

Re: Congested

I hope that the Vicks and hotwater has helped! If you have a vapouriser that will help also. And a suggested already, Vicks Baby Balsam is fantastic! I use it on both my boys all the time - rub a little on the balls of the feet, the chest and back. The doctor also said to rub it up on the neck, but not over the glands. I hope your bub is improving!

Re: Congested
I agree with all the other advice - however do watch out with honey, it isn't recommended for babies or toddlers.  We were also advised to raise one end of the cot slightly when Jaydee was heavily congested - this seemed to help him breath at night.  I spose you could even just raise one end of the mattress a little to help instead.  Good luck - Lui.

Re: Congested
I was told to put vicks on the feet of jumpsuits.  That way it's not on the skin, they can't touch it with their hands then put it in their mouth (not easily in their sleep anyway) and it still works how it should work.  I wouldn't halve the dose of a 12 month old either!  The other thing I was told was to put it on the outside of the singlet so it's not touching the skin and put a jumpsuit over the top of it again it's not touching the skin and they can't get it in their mouth if it's covered like that.  I always used vicks on mine as a bub when she had the sniffles, worked every time.  She hardly ever got sick but that always fixed it.

Re: Congested
The safest bet with vicks is to put some on a hankie/tissue/rag wwhat eva and put it under the sheet in her bed and use a humidifier in her room. I don't know if you can get a product called baby baslm (made by vicks) Also if she is badly congesed try putting something under one end of her matress to help keep her head elevated.
Hope this helps

Re: Congested

In regard to the vick's if you mix the same amount of vicks with vasaline it will make it safe to use on your baby at any age as it is diluted and not too strong.   As far as her congestion goes this can be a bit foul and  can be hard to get them to take but if you dice up about a teaspoon of onion very finely, 3 tablespoons of honey and 2 tablespoon of lemon juice mix that into about a cup of boiling water, Let it sit till cooled and give little bits at a time.  It will soothe her throat and ease congestion.  It is a bit of an old wives tale but could be worth a try.  Good luck

Re: Congested
Just be careful with honey as it has that bacteria that's harmful to babies.

Re: Congested

hey mandy, I was at a loss when my new born infant got a stuffed nose at a week or so of age and I had nothing but vicks, she was very distressed & had actually passed out on my breast whilst feeding due to panicking at not being able to breath through her nose....so i used the Vicks...it did what it was supposed to do and she had NO bad reaction to it what so ever....if I had to do it again though I think I would put it on her clothes on her chest (like her singlet or t-shirt) rather than directly on her chest (not that she got a rash or anything...but maybe I was lucky), I also recommend you stick it on the soles of her feet as thats a chinese pressure point (place socks over the top)...Do you have a humidifier?  If not run the shower with hot water and sit in their with her for a bit you can also boil the kettle and add a bit of vicks in a bowl stir it up and place in her room near (but not in reach) of her bed/cot for the vapours to go through her room (you can micro wave it as many times as you need to so you don't waste the vicks (may need to top up the water from time to time)....also I used to pop some vicks or eucalyptus oil on a tissue and place it under her sheet near where her head would be.....safe as she can't get at it at all....Eucalyptus oil is brilliant if you can get that there.

Stay away from anything that specifically says not to use on babies....I'm with you....they say so for a good reason I imagine.

Best wishes to your little one.

Re: Congested

Thanks so much.. i will try the vicks and the hot water.. as the advice above suggests i think i may mix the vicks with vasoline to dilute it. How scarey for you to go throught his with a bew born! Poor you, im so worried and mine is 6mths.. I do have Eucalyptus oil that i brought back from Oz with me so i will put some under her sheet like u suggested..

Thanks Heaps ill let you know how i get on! xoxo
