Bedding for Babies

Does anyone know when it is necessary to allow baby to have doona or baby quilt instead of sheets? What is the reason young babies only have cot sheets? is it a risk of sids to have doona's? my 6 month old goes to bed with flanalette sheets for winter but he is getting out of them when he wriggles. I figure doona's/quits are easier for them to pull up & are thicker hence warmer. What do you think?

Re: Bedding for Babies

You can use blankets over the sheets, just tuck them in. I have always used sheets & blankets on my boys. I started using a doona at around 12 months with the oldest, and the youngest is 6 months & just has a sheet & a few blankets (depending on the weather) on him. I wouldn't use a doona before 12 months as youneed to be sure they are able to remove it from their face easily. Tuck the sheet & blankets in & if he is still getting out of them put him in a sleeping bag. Hope this helps.

Hi, Yes it is a SIDS risk to have a Doona.. what i found is best and also a recomendation from SIDS is a sleeping bad. I used them from birth for both my girls. They are fantastic and come in all sizes and summer and winter. My daughter used hers right up until she went to her big bed at the age of almost 2yrs. Now my 6mth old is in the sleeping bag. They are great there is pleanty of room to move around and the stay warm all night!
