Re-establishing breastfeeding

Has anyone out there had to seriously boost their milk supply after an absence of exclusive breastfeeding? I found at 3 months my supply all but disappeared and I made the mistake of supplementing with formula but the formula seemed to take over. I've heard fenugreek is the way to go? My son is a hungry baby and is 17 weeks, he has 5-6 bottles during the day and a feed from me at about 3am. Can anyone share their milk boosting experience?!!? I have also been told to pump pump pump and to put him 'on' as much as possible but he pulls off about 2 mins in and gets wriggly and upset. Any advice is welcome!

Diana

All great responses. Maybe let bubby feed more often for a while, try putting him on every hour or so for a little while until the supply builds up then stretch it out to 2 hours and so on.  Pumping will do the trick too.

As crystalmoon said - pump, pump, pump & drink lots of water! There are herbs that can help - I think someone gave you a link to articles that will help. Good luck

I was told with my daughter to pump pretty much every two hours. Then at the next feed give her the expressed milk first to settle her then put her on the breast to finish off.

Re: Re-establishing breastfeeding

Hiya, When my baby was a few weeks old we had a BFing problem and i was told to build my supply by letting him have a feed from each side then after he had finished to pump what i could.  I didn't get much out but it did build up with regular expressing.  So that works, i've found lately Kaelan has been feeding more at night and after a few days of this i'm nearly drowning him now!!  You could also save and give any expressed milk to your baby in a bottle.

He is probably 'wriggling' on the boob because it's a different sucking action to a bottle and if he is use to bottle he may find the breast a bit slow until let down kicks in.  Really, if you don't use it you lose it!  So anything regular, feeding or expressing will build it up.

Looked up some herbs for you: Goats Rue, fennel, dill, fenugreek and milk thistle are all for building up milk supply.  Parsley leaf tea is another one for encouraging milk flow!

Good luck and don't stress!!  Julie

You could try asking a lactation consultant.I have heard of hormones to stimulate milk supply? The only other method I know of is to pump pump and pump.Oh and to make sure you are on a good balanced diet. Good luck Hugs Crystal xx
