I want to try formula with my nearly 12 mth old..any hints?

I am a full time BF mum, but am working full time.

My 11 month old, who is turning 1 year old in a few weeks, has been fussing badly with food. I am persevering  with it, but at night, he tends to wake several times. I feel awful the next day. I know he may be having separation issues, but I have heard that formula may help to fill him up and keep him sleeping longer. He wont take milk in a bottle, my milk included, and poor hubby brings bubby to me everyday at lunch for a feed. I dont want to debate the breast v bottle thing, and I dont want to give up BF altogether, but this is the FIRST time I have EVER used formula (I have 2 other older children)

Any ideas about making this transition work? I am sooo tired. ; 0...

Re: I want to try formula with my nearly 12 mth old..any hints?
I don't think it matters what milk they have.  Mine never had formula and slept all night every night.  Her god-mother put hers on formula at 4 months to try to help her sleep, she's now 6.5 years old and STILL wakes through the night but now she just gets up and has a drink of water, goes to the toilet etc, puts herself back to bed.  Although her mother still wakes up to listen to her, she doesn't really need to now that she's older.  We have a 6 month old at work who has been exclusively breastfed until this week when solids were introduced at lunch time.  She has always slept well.  We have a 7 month old who's mother says she wake up twice a night at least and she's been on formula from 6 weeks when the mother went back to work, and we have one that's just turned 3 months who only ever sleeps for 2 hours, wakes for an hour, sleeps for 2 hours, that's around the clock and he's never tasted breastmilk so you can try it but don't be fooled into believing that formula makes them sleep better!  A nice way of given milk other than your own is to sit down together and have warm milk with a biscuit as a family before brushing teeth.  That's what we do sometimes although mine doesn't really like milk.

I guess I am not really concerned about what type of milk, just something I have heard regarding milk/milk products filling their bellies and helping them to sleep. I am just getting so worn out with lack of sleep, I am getting desperate...

You say hubby is bringing him to you at lunch time for a feed. How about he try without you there, and see how that goes. I know with one of mine, if I was anywhere around no bottle could be used, but if I left then he would have a bottle. And I would go straight to cows milk at this age.
Keep persevering. Leisa

I breast feed both my girls well Ella is now 18 months but from 1 month old i gave Ella formula at night as my milk supply wasnt that great, and it helped her sleep through the night. When she was 8 months old i was pregnant and she went of the breast and was on formula up until 12 months and she was quite content. At 12 months i gave her cows milk 3 times a day and now she has it 2 times a day, it defintly fills them up more if they arent eating alot.

Cheers

Re: I want to try formula with my nearly 12 mth old..any hints?
Well he can have normal milk at 12mths - so you could try him on some of that... Jaydee was weaning off the breast and formula and transferring over to normal milk and soy milk for a month at that age.  I bottle fed him from the first week so that he was used to it (pumped breast milk).  Keep persevering with the bottle - if you keep giving up - he will keep demanding boobie juice straight from the source.  Be firm, he won't starve - he is eating as well... Doing it at lunchtime is best, as he would need a decent feed of breastmilk at breakfast to start the day and in the evening to settle.

Also - you should start to introduce water too - he is old enough and with summer coming he will need the extra hydration.

Yeah, I am getting the picture that cow's milk might be the go, I have given him water with the sippie cup, just want an extra fill up at night to help the sleep thing. Lunch time, I have a brief time to feed, so not time much to persevere. I will be looking at dropping the lunch BF soon anyway, just need that night feed... I bought all the pumps and everything...he really gets MAD when he sees the bottle. I wil have to persevere, I just feel like I am being mean..but you are right...:(

Re: I want to try formula with my nearly 12 mth old..any hints?
Well it wouldn't hurt to try getting one tin of formula - it is more filling than cows milk and it might be less of a shock to his system and taste buds.  Take it slowly, however be persistent - no matter how much he howls - he is not starving and you are a good parent - he will need to learn that this is the only option on offer for this particular feed.

Offer and if he refuses leave it for 10mins then keep trying.  We have to do that with gobble guts and his dinner sometimes still.  It works eventually, and remember - sometimes they just aren't that hungry - and try to make sure you give him food that has a high water content too - like fruit and cereal with plenty of milk (weetbix etc).

You'll be fine - the more relaxed you are about the whole thing, the more accepting he will be.

Yes I know - I came home from rugby on Saturday with a major headache and had the pleasure of Jaydee teething and going ballistic until 4am... He tends to do that when the outlaws are here and Stephen had a race in the morning so I had to let him sleep.

There will come a time when you aren't a walking zombie - I promise.  Have a great weekend - I have a big game tomorrow - I have to get some sleep.  Best of luck with the feeding - it will take a few days, but the effort will be worth it.

Re: I want to try formula with my nearly 12 mth old..any hints?

Since your child is a year old, you can actually go straight to cow's milk instead of formula. But that's your choice of course, there is nothing wrong with using formula at this age (it's just more expensive). Cow's milk has sugar in it (don't know how much, but you can look at the label when you buy some) and may be a bit sweeter than formula. Breastfmilk is sweeter than formula, so your child may take it better than formula.

Also, you can try sippy cups already. But if you go this route, you'll have to buy ones with softer spout. Your child may prefer one over the other, so don't buy more than one of the same kind.

Good luck to you.

Re: I want to try formula with my nearly 12 mth old..any hints?

Ta, thought about the cow's milk.. did have a go at that about 2 weeks ago, took the first bottle..then the second time I did it...nuh uh...grrrrr

Seems to know the difference of course... I have a training cup with a soft spout... just tedious to give him sip after sip...but it is a start. So you reckon forget the formula?

Oh yes.. I say forget the formula altogether. Since your baby has taken the cow's milk before, I say that's already a success. If you want, another idea is to express breastmilk to mix with the cow's milk to ease the transition.

Start with 1/4 cow's milk, then 1/2 half after a few days and go from there.

First get a decent bottles like the avent ones, there are others, but they need to be more Breast like. Then get the age approp formular. keep trying and only offer it at the time you want. I found if I snuggled as if I was feeding my son attached better tot he bottle.

At this age he can start with cows milk to. All you can do is keep trying with both food and milk

Good Luck

Giving him a comp feed on top of a bf feed is fine,as i did this with  my kids..

So The plan is to go and get teats that are the same shape as a breast, and ask your pharmasist/ mothercraft nurse which Formula is the best...... If these work he should settle for u...

take care

Hey cazz,

Read above comments... yeah I talked to the lady in the chemist, and she recommended a few brands, I tried the Heinz toddler formula, but he never even got to really try it, just pushed the bottle away in disgust! lol
