ADHD

Hi to all,

Last night I have read the adhd symptom in the net. My is is very active boy. Last spring I took him to a child psycholgyst, because my cousin said that he is hyper active. They down a test took 1 hour and they said he is not  ADHD. Because can constrate what he is doing and the oher symptoms he hasn't got. But he is a active boy. My concern is if my son ADHD or not how am I going to understand the difference between beeing jyper active and ADHD

Re: ADHD
Make sure he is eating a balanced diet and getting plenty of outlets to burn off that energy.  Enroll him in sports activities and teach him how to relax by breathing deeply.

Re: ADHD
i think it's normal for boys especially to be a bit hyper.  But if they can turn it off and calm down i don't think it 's ADHD.  Some children just have the ADD part.  Check out the diet and let him run off steam, also i noticed sometimes my boys can get hyper when they are overtired as well.  If i think they are getting too out of control i make them sit down and draw, maybe even if they are not having regular meals and snacks it can set their blood sugar too low, so give them chill out time and regular meals as well.

Re: ADHD
I also live in the Middle East and its scary the amount of hyperactive children here! My brother was diagnosed as hyperactive and my mum solved it almost immediately by doing two things: removing all food colouring from his diet, and getting a trampolene. The excess energy needs to be burned off. Food colourings are in so many 'kids' products. I know read the lables on everything to make sure my son doesn't get food colouring. He gets sweets once a week as a treat and only a couple. I prefer to give him cookies (preferably homemade) as I find that the sugar in them doesn't affect him. Food colouring is a nightmare and causes such bad behaviour is unbelievable. Also make sure your son is getting enough sleep, an overtired child also shows very hyperactive behaviour. Hyperactive is when they don't walk- they run. They can't sit still most of the time but they still connect with you and still enjoy things such as reading books and modeling clay.

Re: ADHD

My son wasn't like that before he was over active but in the last couple of months he didn't listen what I told, he couldn't stop. Now with the answers I've received I am watching him try to be more calm to him. Normally he doesn't eat much choclate and sugary stuff . But I think in the last few months I couldn't manage his sleep routine because of sickness of my hubby. I will be morecarefully with his sleep routine now. Thanks for your advices

Re: ADHD

hey i grew up with adhd, and believe me u would know if he had it coz there is no chance of concentrating. my broth and i both had it but one of us would bounce off the walls and rip up books if they got frustrated and the other would just get distrated by anything and i do mean ANYTHING (an ant walking on the desk). the common ground was being unable to control frustration and of course not being able to concentrate. anyway  i dont think ur son is but if it does turn out being adhd then its very managable. good luck

Re: ADHD
Hi
Another easy way
Take them to the park or the back yard if it is big enough and let them run totally riot and burn of all the excess energy
When you get home see if they want to drop and sleep or still very active.
The average child has a lot of energy to burn and if it is not burnt off then of course they will be very active
Jalan has to have a high junk food type diet and she gets very hyperactive
As long as we let her run off the excess energy she is fine...
My teenagers were the same....
They ate stuff went nuts so i would kick them out side to run and play until they were virtually exhausted.
Of course if a child eats something that sets them off and then sits inside plays computer or playstation they are going to seem hyper.
Excess energy is not hyperactivity
Hope this helps a bit as well

Thanx Deb you gave the point which I could not think. Because in last few months I have take care of my hubby, who is really sick. And in the last two months my son was at home because of school holiday. Normally we go out a lot he sleep around 8-9 which I couldn't manage in the last months. And when he gets tired he sleeps straight away. Today I will take him to the park and will see. Thanks a lot what you wright is so reliefing. I am glad that I am part of Minti

Re: ADHD
the differense is control. they can be hyper and be in control or not in control. if they are in control then definately not. My son is autistic with adhd and there is no way he is in control. If i let him he would run in front of cars and play with fire ect...... There is some foods i have found that can trigger this hyperactivity, with my son it is preservitives, specially one that is used in bread to stop it going stale. but things like some apples will also make him hyper.

do some research and try a few things first.

Re: ADHD

Hyperactivity is only one symptom of ADHD, without all the others, it's not ADHD. There are quite a few similar conditions that are easily confused for ADHD as well.

If he's just a very active kid and it's not doing anyone any harm, don't worry about it. If it is too much to handle or causing a major issue, check with a paediatrician to see what you might be able to do to tone him down a bit. Diet might be a factor to look at.

It is only a problem if it becomes a problem.

Cheers, DA
