Childrens Migraines

My daughter who is 4 1/2 had a migraine last wednesday. Very scary since the Doctor said nothing she could do as DD was to young for a needle. I tried giving her Childrens Pandaol but as she couldn't keep anything down, it didn't help much.
And I have been reading up on food intolerances, has anyone got any suggestions for foods that she should be avoiding that may trigger migraines?
Can anyone recommend anything else that she may be able to keep down?
Cheers and Thanks

Re: Childrens Migraines

Just wanted to add that there is an acupressure point between the thumb and the index finger, in that fleshy area of the hand, that is a  headache spot.  Putting pressure on this can help with relieving headaches.  I've tried it on myself and it does work......don't know about for a migrane though they are pretty severe.

Anyway hope it helps.

Before I answer you  have read the other answer to avoid repetation. They are all right. I would definately get her scanned first of all and follow the other advises. Trinking a lot of water slows down the headache. I felt so sorry for her because I know very well

Re: Childrens Migraines

It is reasonable to consider food intolerances as a factor, however you should of course also eliminate more significant medical causes via your GP.

if it is a food sensitivity then there are a number of likely culprits - especially the amines (chocolate, cheeses, bananas, etc) where headaches are concerned. It could be MSG (which occurs naturally in some foods not just as an additive), or a reaction to a preservative such as E282 Calcium Propionate, BHT, Sodium Meta Bisulphate etc etc It can be a real detective job. To complicate matters further there is a possibility of sensitivity to a perfume, to some outgassing from various household items, phenols - the list goes on !

One of the very best sites for related information is the Food Intolerance Network managed by Sue Dengate. if you are from Australia then you have probably heard of her and the amazing work she has done to bring these things to public and professional notice.

Re: Childrens Migraines
Is it actually migraine, or very bad headache? I ask because many people confuse them. If she is getting them a lot, insist she have a CT scan. Not meaning to scare you, but migraines (or even very bad headaches) can be a sign of something. Just as an example, I know a woman who suffered migraines for years - she finally had a CT scan & had a cyst on her brain - she had it removed and was fine. Some people just suffer these things without cause, but she is young - best to be safe than sorry.

Re: Childrens Migraines
i am a sufferer and have been since about 10. i have panadol and nuraphen and maxalon. i am sure you can get a anti nausure for your daughter.

Foods to avoid
  • vegimite
  • tomatoes
  • red wine (even in food's)
  • high acid foods
  • cheese
basicly they are heaps of them. my brain just isnt working. I am not saying dont eat these food just limit what you eat  a day. ie... dont have vegimite toast for breakie then a cheese sandwhich for lunch and spag bog with red wine sauce for tea.

Also get her a excellent pair of sunny's as the sun light can trigger it too.

Good luck
Liz

Re: Childrens Migraines
thanks!
She eats vegimite sandwiches for lunch every day, so will start varying her lunches. Those foods will be fairly easy to avoid or limit and the sunnies is a great idea.

Re: Childrens Migraines
I am sorry to hear that your daughter has migraines.  I also had them as young.  My father used to try everything with me too.  I also had the same problem with keeping anything down.  I think it's just a matter of keep trying until you can find something.  Dad used to give me flat lemonade.  Usually I would be sick shortly after, but if at least I kept a little down, it was better than nothing.

I find now that I don't get many migraines.  I think the cause of the majority of mine was being dehydrated.  That and the fact that I used to worry about anything and everything!!!

Here's hoping your daughter grows out of it also.

Good luck with it all.
Tanya.
