At what point do I take her to the hospital?

At the moment Charlie has a 39 degree temp. I want to know what temp do I take her to PMH? apart from the temp so has no other symptoms apart from being a moody little cow.

I am about to go and get tea for us and go to the chemist and get some more panadol as we are out.

thanks Liz

When her temp is 39.7.  You need to be trying to get it down now though.  Tepid baths are the best way.  Not cold and not warm.  Tepid is cold when they feel it but slightly warmer when you feel it.

Hi
It is more than likely this bug that is going around
Jalan is spiking these temps as well
In the end we took her to her paediatrician and he said rest and fluid and pain relief....
They have to fight this one themselves
She got a cold on top of hers as well and chucks a bit but the temp was up for 3 days before anything else showed
She was 38.5 with panadol
Good luck
Luv Deb

If her tempurature gets any higher it would be best to take her to the hospital.

Re: At what point do I take her to the hospital?

if you child does shiver its because of the temp ,, and thats also even knows they are boiling hot you will have to hugg your little one and wrap her in a blanket untill she also stops shivering,, sounds weird yes but they do have to be warmed up when they shiver ,, after they stop thats when you strip them down again,, ,,, this is just in relation to the other awnser and you are not ment to put a fan dirrectly on a child ...hope all is ok ,, my sons always getting fevers every two to three weeks , i keep the panadole and the nurofen on hand ,, my sons temp only goes down when we use these both one at a time the meds 3 hours apart from the last dose eg

nurofen 12pm

panadole 3pm

nurofen 6pm

panadole 9pm...

and so on if they still have a temp

always make sure that when you do this that you write down what med you have given your child and at what time so you dont double up on the same med as in the end each of these meds eg panadole had been given 6 hours apart from the first dose

thats why these is nurofen in the middle of the times if they still have a fever ,, if you dont get what im saying you are welcome to email me anytime and ill write it down in more detail for you xxx

hope your angel gets better xxxxx Debbie

Re: At what point do I take her to the hospital?
Hio Libby - it can be worrying and it is hard to know when.  I always try to actively control Jaydees temperature if it gets up to 39 - or even over 38.5.  Ensure she isn't over dressed, if she will allow you to use a cool cloth on the back of her neck, this will help to lower her temperature, and check her temperature regularly and make a note of it.  If she has no other worrying symptoms, and you are able to control it, then you should be ok - kids do tend to peak in their temperature in the early evening if they are sick.  They also operate at a slightly higher temperature than us.

Try one of these medical helplines if you want more professional assistance in regard to making a decision about whether to take her to hospital.

Re: At what point do I take her to the hospital?
If there are no other obvious symptoms, I usually would wait until temp has hit 40 and have tried everything else to bring it down. This would mean having a tepid bath, strip down, cool washer, resting in a cool spot, eating an ice block or sucking on ice cubes. If everything doesn't work and temp still on the incline, then take her to emergency. Just make sure that she is drinking enough fluids as you don't want her to dehydrate.

Hope Charlie is OK. Leisa

I meant to add along with the panadol or nurofen. Leisa

Get the panadol into her and strip her down, put a fan on her, and wipe her down with a cold, damp cloth. She will probably shiver and complain she's cold, but keep it up until her temp comes down. If this doesn't help, if the temp stays at the 39/40 mark, take her to hospital. Also make sure you check her over for an rashes - if she has any get to hospital quick smart.

I wouldn't use the cold damp cloth or the fan, as she will shiver and this will raise her body temp.

Re: At what point do I take her to the hospital?
If it gets to 40 take her straight to accident and emergency at your nearest hospital other wise if it comes down with the help of panadol and so forth just try to get her to the doctors at the first possible time. It could be something like tosilitis or and ear infection. Just because we don't see any other other symptoms doesn't mean there is nothing wrong.
Hope she gets better soon.
