Operations and Illnesses

My son is due to have an operation on Thursday and over the weekend has developed a sore throat. We saw a doctor on Saturday who prescribed some medicine and said it should not affect him going into hospital but I'm unsure about this.  Will the operation have to be cancelled?

Re: Operations and Illnesses

Hiya

Both of my kids have had to have operations (one at age 8 and the other aged 1 and a half). Both kids developed a temperature on the morning of admission but displayed no other symptoms and I didnt actually notice their slight temperatures either until the nurse took their initial ob's. Due to the seriousness of anasthetics, the operations were cancelled until the following month. The anethetists will just not take that risk especially with children and really, although I just wanted the operation over and done with, it is so not worth the risk when it comes to kids. Even if u call the hospital, they will just say to come in anyway so they can check them. More than likely, the operation will be cancelled until your child is all ok. Good luck with it all when it happens xx

Re: Operations and Illnesses
It all depends on the operation and whether the doctor thinks that it will effect his health during the operation.  Talk to the doctor doing the operation, if possible and see what they say.  If the doctor already said it would not affect him, then I would trust his judgement.  He would not put your son at risk with the operation and being sick.  I know it's not an easy thing, but they know what is ok for having surgery and what is not and they would tell you right away.  Have faith and I wish your son all the best

This will all depend highly on your doctor. I suggest to phone the doctor and express your concern immediately. Also, let the doctor know that another doctor prescribed medicine for your son.

Re: Operations and Illnesses
when I was having an operation I fell sick few days before the operation. I called the hospital to tell them and they told me to come and they will see. So I went to hospital the morning when the operation was booked and ws told by the team to go home and not risk it. If it was an emergincy operation than they would have taken the risk but as it was not I had to wait about 2 weeks to have the operation.

Re: Operations and Illnesses

the answer to that one is best answered by the doctor doing the surgery.  Only she or he will be able to decide that.  It's best for your child too, because that means that everyone involved in the surgery is informed about what is going on right now with your son.  Best of luck on his operation.

Sorry, I have been lucky with my kids *touch wood (knocking top of head)*.  I would suggest calling the hospital and your gp to find out what they recommend.  Hope it all goes well for you  and your son.

Re: Operations and Illnesses
Ring the hospital and see what they have to say. It would depend on what the operation is and if he has been on medication since Saturday, they usually last 5 days which makes it Wednesday that it should be finished, so he should be OK. But check with the hospital.
