HI ALL,
RYLAN AND MYSELF ARE BOOKED TO FLY BACK TO SYDNEY IN THE MIDDLE OF NOVEMBER, ANY TIPS ON HOW TO KEEP A VERY ACTIVE 16 MONTH OLD SITTING ON THE FLIGHT FOR 1 AND A HALF HOURS? I'LL HAVE TOYS AND FOOD FOR HIM BUT THAT WILL ONLY AMUSE HIM FOR MAYBE 5 MINS, THE OTHER THING IS HIS EARS WE FLEW WITH HIM AS A NEW BORN AND GAVE HIM HIS BOTTLE AT TAKE OFF AND LANDING.
ANY TIPS WOULD BE MUCHLY APPRECIATED

Re: FLYING WITH A 16 MONTH OLD
I flew with grub when he was 12 month old. My chemist told me to give him a dose a day of demazin/dimetapp in the week before and the week after flying. Also to have a saline spray on hand and to use it just before the flight. As grub never took a dummy and was too little for suckable lollies, she said put anything in a bottle that he will not refuse. SO chocky milk it was! He had no problems, but in doing everything for him, I neglected myself and I ended up with blocked ears and infections.

Oh no! That is exactly what happened to me when we flew with Sophie. Oh well, at least we know we are always thinking of our bubs first! :)

Re: FLYING WITH A 16 MONTH OLD
Hi, we took our little Sophie to the Gold Coast at about 19 months. It was a 2 1/2 hour flight. On the way up there she slept for the first hour of the flight and the rest she screamed due to sore ears....sorry to scare you. I went to a chemist up there and bought some Demazin for infants as that is what my family doctor uses. It worked a treat on the way home. She slept for the first hour as I think the noise of the place puts them to sleep and when she woke up she was just happy to sit on my lap and look at the magazines. Sophie is very active as well and hates sitting still, but you will be surprised at how well behaved they are on the plane. Lots of snacks is a great idea!! Good luck with it all. It will be perfect, but I would reccomend the demazin. Amy

Re: FLYING WITH A 16 MONTH OLD
Thanks amy, i  hoping he will have a little sleep on the flight because i know if he is awake he's just going to want to go and explore.
His ears hurting is my main concern but i will defianately have alot of snacks and lollys if not it will be his bottle or some water.
my friend suggested some phenergon if that's how you spell it, but apart from him being to young i'm not to keen on giving it to him, but maybe i will look at the demazin.
will let you know how i get on

if i were you, i'd search this topic using the "find stuff" search bar on the top righthand corner.  minti has some awesome articles about this very thing and you'll get more info than even the Q&A section.

Re: FLYING WITH A 16 MONTH OLD

Good luck!

Your flight is fairly short.. but it can seem like forever with a toddler! I have flown long haul with my son at 4 months and we had a 6 hour flight when he was 10 months, and another at 11 months old. When he was 11 months I took a bagful of toys, I made sure we sat at the back of the plane (less people to annoy) and he had water at take off and landing. I found it really hard work as I was constantly having to entertain him and distract him from wanting to get up. However, that being said, I think you will find the noise and feel of the plane will naturally soothe him.

Good luck! Let me know how you get on as we have another 6 hour return flight in December!

Lorna

Re: FLYING WITH A 16 MONTH OLD
I have to say you are lucky for only having to fly 1 1/2 hours.  I had to go with my daughter on a 6 hour flight, and it was very hard.  I made sure I had alot of snacks and I brought some crayons and paper and a few books for her to look at.  For you, since it's so short, is it possible to get her to nap for that time?  I don't know what time you fly during the day, but that may help you alot with the whole thing.  Good luck and have a nice trip.

Re: FLYING WITH A 16 MONTH OLD

My husband and I flew with our son when he was 18 months old, and what worked for us are a bunch of new inexpensive toys. Do not bring old toys, unless it's one that your daughter really can't stop playing with. New toys will hold attention longer.

Also, if you haven't introduced writing implements, it would be a great time too. Look into aqua doodles (pen that holds water). It comes with a special paper that shows colors when wet with water.

Re: FLYING WITH A 16 MONTH OLD
Hi Jess,
We are in the same boat as you.We are flying to the UK next month as Sophie will be 17 months. I was told to give her a bottle on take off as she has trouble in the past with ear infections. At least your flight is short.
He will be OK, maybe he'll run up and down the aisle.
Good luck
Tracey

Re: FLYING WITH A 16 MONTH OLD

Hi When i've flown with toddlers its always taking off and landing thats been the hard part for them. I agree about giving them a bootle of juice if they will taqke it or I have given them a lolly to suck as this takes the pressure off the ears when landing.Might be a bit young for a lolly though. Good luck. Its not a long flight so you will be fine xxxxxxxxx
