Ten year old - birthday party?

Hi, was just wondering... I am a mother to a soon to be 10 year old who up until a year or so ago was living with dad. I've never done a birthday party before, so I have NO CLUE at all as to what the kids will be expecting.

I talked with my son, and we decided on a movie night, where he invites a handful of friends and they watch a movie and eat pizza (maybe) but I am a little worried that his friends won't think the party is cool enough. I don't want him to be teased about how "lame" his party was.

Should I organise some games as well? Or have some prepared just in case? Can anyone offer some advice on things I should do but haven't thought of?

10 year olds are at that age when they want to start being 'cool' haha. If you end up having a movie night and want to make it a bit more special (although the kids would love a movie night anyway) you could hire a data projector and have a giant 'moviescreen' on one of your blank walls or the ultimate boys party, hire a data projector and a games console (playstation/nintendo/xbox- ask your son which one he prefers) and get a game for the boys to play on the big screen. There are heaps of non violent games around that are fun when played with accessories such as an eye toy (where the character in the game does what the player is doing) or a steering wheel kit- you can even get a virtual skateboard/snowboard! Games and systems are not expensive TO HIRE, it's buying them that will cost you an arm and a leg. Have a turns taking system in place so that everyone has a fair amount of 'game time'. Good luck, I hope your son has a great birthday :)

Re: Ten year old - birthday party?
Hey,I can answer this one!!! After living through all types of parties I'd suggest with boys to organize an activity where they work off energy. That's so good to avoid "play" fighting and going nuts at your place. Have a look at the movie choice to avoid lawsuits..LOL!!! Pizza is a favourite and here we always give goody bags??? Do you guys do that? Candy and something cool like little flashlights or those working little tools that you get at the dollar store. Geee do you guys have dollar stores? Great source for birthday stuff here! Hope you have a great party, they are so much fun!

Yep that's exactly the same as what my nephew had for his 10th. A few mates, junk food and the boys picked the movies. This is the age they stop wanting parents around doing party games, they just wanna hang out with thier mates. But they do want mum to get all the food ready, and do all of the cleaning up!!!!

I think if that if that is what he wants, go for it,.... My son just turned 10 this year. and we done what you have planned and his mates thought it was so cool, and that was back in august and they still rave about it now....

Also get your son to pick the movies as well....

Hope he has a great time...

Re: Ten year old - birthday party?
Hi,
10-year old boys and girls do NOT want their Mum to organise games!!!
If you want an active cool party, organise an activity party, for example ice-skating party, tobogganing, cart-racing, paint-ball, swimming..., depending on what there is on offer near you and of course on the taste of  your 10 year old. My daughter had swimming party last year in the local splash-pool (mini aqua park) and the kids loved it. This year she had an ice-skating party and they loved it again.

A fun idea (or cool idea ... ) might be a fear factor party.

There are other fun ideas at this website.  Very helpful for games and themes.
