advice on disposable nappies please!

After a few days of poo shooting up the back and even once up the front of my son's Huggies nappies and onto his clothes, I have decided to change brands. He is almost 5 months old, about 7.5kg and is in Crawler size. Does anyone have any recommendations? I got a free sample of Cosifits in a pharmacy sample bag and it caught all the poo - they seem to have more padding in the back - so I have bought some of those. Have done a bit of googling and the Aldi ones and Babylove seem to be the front runners. Today is my birthday and I was sitting with my son in our restaurant when I realised there was poo on my top and skirt. It was the last straw! He was upright the whole time so the poo is oozing up and out of the nappy! I have some Huggies Toddler size nappies but he's not even crawling yet so I can't get my head around going up to the Toddler size already. I'm sure they'll be too big anyway. If anyone else has had this problem and figured out how to fix it I would be very grateful to hear your advice!

update on disposable nappy problems
used Woolies' new Select nappies for the past two weeks and no leaks! They have a cute frog design in the middle of the grippy part that helps with getting the nappy on straight and a nice soft and silky feel - better than Huggies. We started solids on the weekend so Matthew's number twos are more solid now. Thanks everyone for your advice!

woolies/safeway nappies - sizing advice please!

Babylove just failed the gravity defying poo test...

I'm going to try Woolies/Safeway Select. Could anyone please advise as to whether I should buy crawler size nappies for my 8kg baby or do I need to buy toddler size?

Re: woolies/safeway nappies - sizing advice please!

Hi,

I use safeway select nappies & find them great. They are bigger than huggies so you would probably only need the crawler's. Huggies newborns are too small for my daughter but the safeway select fit newborn fit her great.

Hope that helps.

Cheers Dee

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!
The Aldi nappies leaked poo out the top this morning (baby was upright the whole time). I went to Coles and bought a packet of Babylove crawler size. I noticed in today's junk mail that the Woolies ones have a new improved design, so I will probably try those next. But the crawler size only suits up to 9kg so I will probably have to buy the toddler size. Matthew is almost 8kg now. If anyone who uses the Woolies ones can advise as to sizing - can you really use them up to 9kg or do you have to move up a size a bit earlier like I have had to with Huggies - I would be most appreciative.

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!

update on the gravity defying poo test (that's when poo leaks out the top of the nappy when the baby has been upright the whole time): the cosifits failed, but so far, the aldi/mamia ones have passed!

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!
I hate to say it but I found that every time we had leakage issues, it was because the diapers were too small.  You just may have to commit to that larger size.  LOL

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!

thanks but I've found that both the cosifits and the mamia nappies in crawler size are quite a lot bigger than the huggies ones; I'm sure the other brands are too - so it works out a lot cheaper per nappy to buy another brand of crawler size than go up to toddler in huggies

apparently you can exchange unopened boxes for a bigger size at most places

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!
Hi, Yeah thats horrible, I thought it was just me but the last two boxes of huggies i brought just didnt make the grade. pee out the side which wasnt pleasant. But I have used a few brands now, baby love is ok, if your child doesnt have really sensitive skin, as they dont seem to draw the urine away as much. the you'll love coles brand are slightly bigger, cheaper and work well, I've just brought a box of the snugglers a friend of mine has reccommended them to me, said they have improved them and they are pretty cheap also. but i havent tried them for myself yet, finishing the nappys off i have open at the moment. Other wise dont try the joey ones they are horrid, maze well wear nothing, and the safeway ones are great, I just dont have a safeway near by.. only coles so they tend to win my vote at the moment.

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!

I'm usually a believer in you get what you pay for - you can't charge a premium price for an inferior product and maintain sales if there is a cheaper alternative of equal quality - so went straight for the huggies when bub was born, but sounds like it's worth trying the coles ones and the snugglers as well

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!
I think I'm going to be an exception here lol. I found the mamia ones made Sephie smell _realllllllly_ bad. So be careful if your bub has sensitive skin!  Sephie doesn't react to huggies, (which she only recently stopped leaking poo out of), and Baby Love..... I wish she was ok with the Mamia ones, they were so cheap! lol

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!
interesting... my husband noticed a very bad smell the other night after I switched to the Mamia ones, but I put it down to teething. Will keep an eye on this - or should I say a nose...

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!
Yeah Wollies & safeway are the same, just depends on what area you live in. They are alot cheaper than huggies. When they are on special I can get a box of 62 newborn for $10. They don't leak for me like huggies do &  my daughter hasn't had nappy rash from them which I think is great!!

Yeah, gotta love the mess! lol.  Try the next size up and see how that goes.  We just keep trying new brands until we find one that works, different for each child too! lol.

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!

the problem with going the next size up is that there are less in the box so the price goes up - from 32 cents a nappy to 40 cents a nappy, and that's at $28.95 a box which is the lowest price I have ever seen

at 7.5kg I don't want to go to toddler size (recommended weight 10 to 15 kg) if I can keep him in crawler size in another brand

on the bright side I've just realised that when he starts solids in a few weeks I can probably go back to huggies so I can use the ones I already have

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!

I had the same problem with huggies when my son was about 2 months old, i just went up to the next size and it solved the problem.

One of my friends uses the aldi nappies and is very happy with them, she gave me a couple to try out but my son leaked quite badly within 2 hrs of putting them on him, im not happy with the aldi brand at all and wont use them again. Im definatly a huggies fan but everyone has their favs.

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!
I used to buy nappies from a company that home delivered and I used to get the seconds. On some of them the pretty patterns were missing, or maybe a tab, but they were very good. And only $20 a carton. Can't remember where I got them from, but if you look in your local phone book they might have some listed. The other ones I used if I ran out were ones from The Warehouse. They were very good and we didn't have aldi when I had the kids in nappies.

NAh I just had a roll of packing tape handy, worked just as well. And it wasn't all of them, just a few if any.

Hi Anne,

WOW, here was me thinking I was the only one having probs with Huggies nappies . . . They really have gone down hill haven't they!!!! I would have to say that they are really a poor excuse for a nappy atm . .

I've gone back to Woolworths Premuim brand. They look and feel like a huggies nappy BUT no leaks!!! They are also GREAT in price . .

Goodluck with it all . .

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!

thanks - Woolies isn't very convenient for me to get to though... but then aldi is worse

the cosifits leaked overnight but I think that was because Matthew was lying down

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!
I found that pampers for me is and has been the best out of all I have tried....   I believe they are few and far between to be found in Australia... As when I was there I could not find them and had to deal with a rather nasty nappy rash as well..

If you can find pampers I'd suggest at least giving them a test a run...

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!
I buy the Aldi ones, they look and feel very similar to Huggies but obviously cheaper.  I've had no problems with poo sneaking out either!!  Because Aldi isn't my usual suprmarket i go there and buy a couple of packs at once which will last for a while - maybe a month or more.  Works for me!

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!
will go to aldi tomorrow... can you remember how long your little ones were in crawler size? I try to minimise my trips to aldi, particularly in this warm weather - there's no shady parking and the car becomes oven-like in a very short time... think I will stock up big!

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!

Sorry, did not see your Q until now.  Kaelan is now 8 months (just turned) and i'm using the Large size 7-15 kg (i think thats the weight) and they are in a green packet.  I usually just buy two bags at a time which costs about $32, i haven't found that he grows that quickly i can't use up a bag before i go on to the next size, so i'm sure it'll be fine if you get a couple of bags at a time.  Can't remember how long he was in Crawlers for exactly.

i also try to minimise my trips to Aldi...i usually don't buy much else there, although my hubby likes to shop there!!

thanks - I'm really happy with them - no leaks! Also I love the circle in the middle of the grippy part which helps make sure they're perfectly centred!

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!
I found huggies to be good for newborns, but now the quality has slackened a fair bit.
I swear by snugglers and Mamia (bought from aldi) as they have great absorbency....
I wouldn't use baby love again as they didnt cut the chase for me but thats just my opinion.
Hope this helps and i hope your son's poo gets a bit more solid soon!
Cheers

Re: advice on disposable nappies please!

interesting - on the various forums I googled, most people seemed to say that snugglers weren't as good as huggies (they are made by the same company so one is lower quality than the other), but maybe it's just a perceptual thing... sounds like it will be worth making a special trip to aldi tomorrow

probably still at least another month until we start solids!
