Inappropriate dress for halloween

My nine year old looks like a hooker in her halloween costume.   I don't want to squelch her or assign any intention to her clothing (she really is very innocent in this) but I hate to see her dressed this way, especially when she doesn't know the connotations of her clothing.  Any advice?

Re: Inappropriate dress for halloween

I would be helpful to know what the costume is so that I could be more specific, but if you get her something special that makes the costume look longer or something cool to go over the chest area if you feel it is too daring she may wear it. The trick is make it something:

  • that is her favourite colour
  • that improves the costume and makes it 'cooler'
  • that glows in the dark (I have HEAPS of ideas for this one)
  • sparkly with glitter diamontes or rhinestones (you can iron on diamontes or even spray part of the costume with glitter hairspray)
  • that she helps attach to the costume herself and it is a project you have FUN with together (don't tell her it's to make her costume more appropriate- just say you had a good idea and want to see how it looks)

what you add doesn't have to be all of these things, they are just suggestions.

Happy Halloween! As a circus performer and costume character, I love that there is a time of year when everyone dresses up! It's the only day I feel 'normal' haha

Hope it all works out for you and your daughter :)

Re: Inappropriate dress for halloween
i think the idea to change the costume by making it cooler is the way to go.  it's not a bad costume--she's a little pink devil--it's just that the costume is too big for her and it's been adjusted in a way that is making it too revealing around her middle.  i do have options though, and this helps.

Re: Inappropriate dress for halloween

If you want to cover the midriff you could  pin some kind of darker or lighter pink scarf around the middle. Put some diamontes on it or sew a couple of little loops on the scarf so that you can attach some pink glow sticks as a belt or even hang some glow bracelets off it. You could tie it all together by letting her wear pink glow bracelets, anklets and something glowy for her hair. Just use the normal glowsticks and tape them together with invisible tape so that they don't come undone.

Hope you and your daughter have a great Halloween. I wish I had some kids to hang out with this Halloween :)

Re: Inappropriate dress for halloween

It is just fancy dress and everyone goes OTT at halloween, it is the time to look like what you're not, so I'd be more worried about a paed looking at her the wrong way than what the connotations are!

Umm... What is the outfit exactly? Is the outfit actually that of a whore or just looks a bit that way? Why does she want that particular outfit? Is it to be shocking, sexy, weird, bizzare, make a statement, or what? If you can let me know what her intentions are I can suggest anything else that would work. Haven't lost a fancy dress contest yet! LOL

it's a pink devil costume.  i think if i amend it to cover her midriff a little bit more, it will help tremendously.  it's probably my issues more than hers (for sure!) to tell you the truth!

Yeah, things like that a full body leotard or similar with tail attached is great and a little set of horns, pitchfork, that's all that's really needed. Just reduce a bit of flesh exposure and it'll be all cool.
