Worried mum

My 16 month old daughter had a really bad fall today. She was out the back playing & i heard a big bang & scream, the ladder (I could have killed my hubby for leaving this out!) had fallen on top of her and she was pinned underneath it on the concrete. She obviously smacked her head as she fell & has got a lump about the size of a 10c coin on the back of her head. Shes also got a swollen eye from where it landed on her face. She seemed to get over it fairly quickly when it happened, she didnt show any signs of concussion or anything, so i didnt take her to the docs.

Anyways, i have been trying for the last 2 hours to get her settled for bed & shes just really irritable. She will eventaully settle but then 10 mins later is waking up screaming suddenly & gagging like shes going to vomit (although she hasnt yet) Is this just teething or could it be something to do with the accident earlier on today?

I've tried giivng her panadol & shes refusing to take it, keeps gagging it back up. I dont know what to do. Im a bit worried. Any adivce?

You poor things! How is she? Did you get her to the doc's? I would have been quite worried too as concussion can be quite a tricky  thing. I would always err on the side of caution with such a big bang on the head. Hope all is well.

Re: Worried mum
It doesn't sound like the fall knocked her out so that is really good.  I think that is normally the first thing the doctor will ask.  A nasty bump on both sides of the head is probably really hurting her.  I think the only way you are going to feel better is if you take her to the doctor.  Sometimes the peace of mind is just worth it.  Good luck and so sorry this happened.  We almost had a similar situation with the ladder but I caught my 2 year old before he fell off the top.  UGH!!

Re: Worried mum
i would call my doctor asap.  if she is still irritable and acting like she wants to vomit, she could have a concussion and should be seen immediately.  keep her awake until you hear from your doctor about what to do next.

The ladder is metal & heavy (i can only just lift it!) thats why i'm worried. I think i will take her up the hospital, she still hasn't settled.

Re: Worried mum

Normal falls for children are usually nothing to worry about, but ... I don't mean to worry you, but a ladder falling on your little one is a bit more than usual. Is the ladder heavy? Metal? Wood? from high up?

Usually, serious signs of a fall would be acting confuse, vomiting, passing out...   I don't know if vomiting hours later could still be to to this, but because she is irritable, I would suggest to go ahead and take her to the doctor.

Good luck.
