How do you get children to stay sitting down in the bath?

Hi Everyone,

Hope you all have a fantastic Melbourne Cup Day.

My friend has a 3 year old boy (he is so adorable and loving) and whenever he is in the bath, he can't sit still and keeps standing up and dancing etc. I have suggested all sorts of things, but am curious to see what you all would suggest. How can my friend encourage his son to stay sitting down in the bath?

Tanya :)

Our son is very active, and very cheeky... He learned at 9mths old, if you stand up - you get removed from the bath/shower immediately.  There were no 2nd chances for him at that age, as he was always in the bath or shower with one of us and he didn't enjoy sitting outside by himself - he learned very quickly.

Persistence paid off as always, and now has 3 warnings, and knows that he has to get out if he pushes it too far.  No mucking about, it is too dangerous... He now lies down practices his kicking splashing, blowing bubbles and plays with all of his toys - he has a great time.  However, he is well aware of the rules, we are in charge - not him, therefore bath time is safe and fun.

Honestly, we finally gave up on the sitting down and put those stickers in the tub so he can't slip.  LOL.  It works for us and he's relatively safe.

Apart from the safety issue, does it matteras long as they are supervised?  my boys are up and down in the bath like yo-yos.  Once they have the toys they want they usually stay seated.  Make sure the bath isn't too deep, if they aren't too comfortable with water (like  my three year old) it can feel intimidating.

There are coloured bath tablets you can get from Woolies that turn the bath water all sorts of colours........he can put them in himself and watch the water change colours. Heaps of fun and get's their minds off other things. I forget the name of them.

Those bath tablets sound cool. I take it they don't stain anything and are non toxic. Could be perfect for clowning too... Haha when will I grow up? lol

My suggestion would be just to get him some toys for the bath water. Especially speed boats. To get them to drive in the water the child has to be sitting down. Also another thing would be to have soothing music on and not a bright light in the bathroom. These help to calm a child down, and can be nice and relaxing for them. Leisa

I'll get my friend to try the soothing music and see if that works. The little one is so funny. Every time he's asked to sit down, he happily says 'OK' and sits down straight away and then two seconds later is up again dancing around :)

Anything they can pour with, whether she buys bath toys or does what I do and get plastic cups etc from the cupboard, keeps them amused when washing and with my experience they don't even think of standing.....  My two year old takes a couple of cars in with him and he drives them along the side of the bath, haven't had a problem with him standing yet....  Goodluck to her x

Re: How do you get children to stay sitting down in the bath?

Aqua Doodle has bath tub toys that stick on the wall or inside of the tub. Try sticking them on the low inside of the tub, causing the child to sit to play. Let them know it is not safe to stand in the tub, they must sit down. Is water too cold? or too hot?

Get in the tub with them and sit them down between your legs and play with them.

Haha such a simple idea and I didn't even think of it! I wonder if he has :) It's funny isn't it, it always takes convincing to get them to have a bath in the first place, then they have so much fun in there that they don't want to get out :)

Thanks for your idea, I'll pass it on for sure :)
