Iron Transfusion

Hi all..Has anyone here had to have an Iron transfusion?  I am 36 weeks pregnant and am very anemic.... Doctor said I had to have an iron transfusion if my levels havent picked up this week.

Are there any risks to the baby?  Or to me if I dont  want to have one?

Any help would be much appreicated

Re: Iron Transfusion
If taking iron tablets, make sure that you are taking a high enough dose to actually increase your levels.  Most commonly found supplements do not have a sufficiently high enough dose to increase really low levels.  But if your doc feels this is the only course of action left open to you, don't argue, just go with it, for your sake and that of the babe.  Good luck.

Re: Iron Transfusion
Hi there,

I think you mean Iron Infusion not Iron Transfusion . . .

Iron infusions should be seen as a last resort and NOT a quick fix. I don't know of any doctor that will do an infusion first. I have a close friend who was given many infusions after oral iron tablets and needles  failed to bring up her blood levels.

My friend had a severe allergic reaction to the first infusion and was switched to another IV iron and then  tolerated that well.  Serious reactions are rare but why even take a chance you can try needles or tablets first. Personally myself I would seek another opinion before taking this major path . . .

Goodluck sweetie and I hope all goes well . . ..

If you are that anemic, then how are you still pregnant?  I've been threatened with weekly iron boost needles in the past due to low reserves, but never a transfusion.  Oh, and the needle, is huge! lol.

You should start taking a good quality pregnancy multivitamin and an iron supplement, they can boost your levels reasonably quickly and keep you topped up.
