I can remember to my "prehistoric youth" of doing this we called it 'skipping'. I remember one time, hiding out in our celar inside the cedar closet, hearing my step-father come down the stairs and hiding behind all the winter coats stored! My knees were shaking until I heard his feet depart!
im from australia as well and i only know it as wagging . i hadnt heard of the word "skiving" before. i just checked the world book dictionary they both mean to go depart or leave. Wagging is derived from british which australian language tends to follow . the dictionary doesnt say where skiving is derived from. Can someone tell me if it's an american terminolgy? cheers annie
Skiver to me is very olde scots word for Shirker, Wagger, truant or person who evaides their work or duties. Sounds like my husband at times.LoL. Also we used it to describe an inferior pelt of sheepskin that was not fit for tanning. Hope this helps. I am sure it has other meanings, but these were the ones we used them for and you can find the words skive, skiver or skiving in countless olde Scots poems. My grandmother used to call an old damaged sheepskin a skiver, when they dressed (slaughtered) a sheep for the pot.
I think it is an Aussie term, so not surprised you overseaser's don't know it. It means that a child is taking time away from school without permission of their parents.
Yep thats right! Well done hunni! Its funny that we all speak english but have different words or more slang words for thing. But must say i wagged alot haha.
LOL, I would have been to scared of my Mums reaction. She would have made me feel dreadful and disrespectfull and letting myself down. Though believe me I thought about it every time physics and maths came round. Yuck, Yuck, Yuck. Skyving as we called it seemed a good option.hehe.
