How do you get your kids to sit for a family photo?

It's all my mother asked for this year.  A group photo of the fam.  Ethan started yelling and screaming.  Do we really want a family picture with the kids screaming?  What do you do to get your kids to cooperate?

Ahhh yes I am forever trying to get a good family photo. If hubby is in it the kids just jump all over him and they look great but hubby will close his eyes to avoid the flash. Its hard to get a good photo of three kids. Sometimes I can get them altogether if they are watching tv but no smiles. It really is a matter of perserverance and luck for me.

This was posed by my MIL. She said Smile! and look how fake?
My little boy has a lolly in his mouth. Usually if I try to get them together they fight and no it doesn't make for sweet photos.

If you get them professionally done the kids may take it more seriously or it may be more fun. If the photographer knows their stuff and is good with kids it would help a great deal.

so sorry, kris.  i think it's really hard at his age--it feels overwhelming somehow.  maybe we should have set it up and then told them it was for a picture--bait and switch?  i bet mom was bummed out.

Re: How do you get your kids to sit for a family photo?

If you are talking professional photos, most photographers are great with the kids.

If not, a few tips. Make sure that when you are doing the photo, I usually try to do it in the morning before the kids get tired.

Is there a favourite toy of Ethans that he could play with to distract him.

Let the kids fidget, move etc, until you are ready to actually take the shot. Then get them to sit down. It is hard to get a 2 yr old to sit still while trying to get everyone posed.

Have the photographer with a toy or something to hold up and distract their attention toward the camera.

Hopefully this will help you. Leisa

I think the time of day is key and a great thing to remember.  I'll have to try that.
