When is the best time to stop breasfeeding as we are trying again?

Hi Guys

My girl is now 9 months and she is very healty. She has never been sick. Exception she had chickenpox when she was 8 months.

We have decided to start trying for one more baby. She is on the formula apart from the morning feed. I express during the day and use the milk in her day feeds. I don't have much milk so if i stop i don't think we would feel it.

My friend had told me it is best to stop any breastfeeding or expressing when trying for another baby. It is good to get a period, get cleaned out before another pregnancy and as well as that there will be more vitamins and minerals for the new baby.

What do you guys suggest? Should i stop expressing and carry on with formula. It seems like an easier option or should i continue. Your opinion is so valuable.

Thanks in Advance

hi,

i think you should do whats best for you and bub. i fell pregnant when my big girl was only 3months (unplanned but will never change a thing and want to to it again). unfortunately i didnt have the opportunity to breast feet past a month, i was just one of those unfortunate mums you did everything to breast feed and had no milk. you do need to keep in mind all your vitamins etc that are required to take and especially the folate.

have a chat to your doctor and see what they say, remember its what you are both comfortable with, its about you and bub and the new bubby when it happens

If you want to continue to provide your daughter with some breastmilk, then there is nothing to stop you from continuing to breastfeed or express while you are pregnant. You certainly don't need a "clean out" period, it's a bit of a myth. A period isn't cleansing, as such, it's just the remnants of your body's failure to get pregnant after ovulating; so if you do get pregnant, then your body doesn't need to clean anything out. And your body will give nutrients to your unborn baby before it supplies nutrients to your breastmilk, so there is no need to worry about your new baby being harmed because of breastfeeding. You definitely should think about a pregnancy and breastfeeding supplement, though, even if you decide to fully wean, as your body will be the last to receive nutrients so you will be the one missing out if their is a deficit.

I've popped in some links to some articles that will give you more information than I can in the space.

kellymom - Do I need to wean to get pregnant?
La Leche League - Breastfeeding during pregnancy articles
Australian Breastfeeding Association - Breastfeeding through Pregnancy and beyond

Having said all that, my best advice would be to wait until your daughter is at least 1 year old. Studies show that this is the minimum amount of time needed for you body to fully recover from your last pregnancy, so for your own health and well-being it would be best to wait a little while longer. Though I know what it's like to want another baby!

I'll tell U what my doctor said to me:

When I was pregnant my baby was 5 months only( i didn't plan for it)   and I liked to continue breastfeeding (I use d  infant formula also), she told me that : I can complete breastfeeding till the fourth month only otherwise it would affect my new baby .

I completed breadtfeeding for 3months and then stopped .

In case you weren't on a prenatal vitamin while you were breastfeeding, it is best to go ahead and be on that now - no matter when you decide to start trying for another baby.

I agree with the other ladies, I have had my 11 month old daughter on formula since 4 months, and still Breastfeed, to start with i didnt have much milk so I chose to do both. now i only feed her of a night as I am trying to give it up as i have had mastitis so many times(i have had it 4 times since the start on october).

It is also up to you on how you want to do it, personally I wouldnt want to be feeding a newborn and toddler at the same time

I would stop breastfeeding as this may prevent you from ovulating all together.  But check with your doctor to see what they recomend about the period and such as mine told me to not try before a year since your body needs that long to get back to normal...Good luck and make sure you take vits and eat healthy!!!

i would stop breastfeeding all together and make sure you are takeing folate and eating really well, let your body have atleast one period first and that will help you determin when you are due once you get pregnant as it is very hard to pinpoint when you havn't had one yet. goodluck
