hyper flexibility

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience in regards to children with hyperflexibility.  My son is 13 yo and he can bend any joint in his body with extreme ease, eg, fingers back to the back of his hand, tips of his fingers all touching his wrist and so on.  He isn't sporty in anyway, he use to go to swimming lessons as I felt this would be a great way to increase his muscle tone but unfortunately he is over it now.  Any suggestions??  Also what are the disadvantages with having muscle hyper flexibility?

Re: hyper flexibility

hi im Tara and im 15 and i have hyperflexability. they have told me i wont be able to do much sport or be able to go into the army like i wanted but i feel that if they didnt tell me i had this then i would of still done these things. so tell your son not to give up on anything he wants to do as he will be able to do it. i can twist my ancles i can put my fingers to the wrong side of my wrists and all the stuff your son can proberly do. i havent found any disadvantages yet but you never now there could always be somethink that happens that i might not be able to do. i have started phsyo and it helps alot and has started to build up my musle after 8 and half mouths. maybe if you havent you shoould try it.

Re: hyper flexibility
I used to be able to bend my thumbs down to the inside of my wrist.  Those were the days, 15 odd years ago now, and if I were to try it again, I'm sure I'd end up in the hospital! lol.  I think it is normal.  Just apart of him growing up.  My sisters were the same as well.  As long as he doesn't push his limits, he should be fine.

Re: hyper flexibility
thanks for your reply Arna, I known alot of children over the years to be known as double jointed either with their hands and legs etc but not on such a large scale as my son.  Even when I took him to the podiatrist as he has very rolled in feet, she even commented on the extent of his hyper flexibility - saying it's not always a good thing!  Just wondering if there was a real downside to it later on in life.
