Hello my baby is 6 weeks old, and for the few days he has been very unsettled, crying as though he is in pain, sleeping ALOT through the day and night, and not feeding very well through the day (he still has good feeds at night).. Could this be the growth spurt?? I thought they get more hungry if thery are growing? He will only feed for a few minutes before spiting out the nipple and crying, then he frefuses to relatch on.... im a bit confused!! anyone else experience this???
I've added the links to a few articles for you, although there are heaps more....just look up reflux under the read advice section. Also look up Colic, a term used for babies that just seem to cry and cry. I don't think they know exactly what causes this but it might be of some help, have also answered your question below.
try a little of fennel tea in a bottle of expressed milk or if u can drink some (its not everyones tast) he will get it threw u. it dosnt hert to try it as its a natural spice :-)
You could always try Mylicon Gas drops and see if that hleps. IMO it sounds like maybe a case fo reflux......it is gets worse with time I would definately see the Doc. Our DS has VERY SEVERE reflux....so I always air on the side of caution.
When you say that he feeds better at night, it really makes me ting that it could be reflux. He is "dream feeding" sleeping and scuking at the same time and doesn't realize that he is doing it....classic reflux behavior. When he is awake and alert, he will refuse because he realizes it hurt....See the doc. just to be safe....
I agree with the others, it could be refulx or gas. If your baby is formula feed and is on reg formula then it could be the type of formula. Many babies get alot of gas from milkd-based ones. But if they are breast feed then it could be something that you are eating that is not agreeing with thier tummy, ie spicy food, caffeine, etc. Also have you tried baby gas drop? Mylacon is a good brand. If that does not help then call the doc or take him in to get seen. My son was like this his first few months and I just gave him the drops and it worked great. Also, try a little tummy massage and see if that helps him too....At least to relax and sooth him...Good Luck!
Some babies at that age do sleep alot, however, with the extreme fussiness and crying the first thought that came to mind was either severe wind and/or reflux. Definitely go to the doc to get him checked out, but don't let them tell you breast fed babies don't get wind because there is no air in breastmilk (that is, of coarse, if you breast feed him) - I had one doc tell me that about my oldest once, but she used to burp and fart like mad, and when I switched her to formula, I had to give her one specifically designed for colicy babies as she would get severe wind pains on any others, and the "colic-free" formula did the trick!
Yes I do breast feed, but havent had problems with him like this since he was born so its bery random, and one day he will be fine, then the next couple he is restless... Im going to the Clinic today, thanks for your comment :)
Because he is only 6 weeks old i would just get him checked out at the GP or clinic just to be sure there is nothing else going on. It could be a growth spurt but sometimes if a baby has reflux they will act like this and can get exhausted so they just sleep. My babe was quite fussy on the breast and apparently had 'silent reflux' but he was also very pukey as well. Anyway get him checked just to be sure.
Thanks for all your help. What are symptoms of silent reflux? my bub never really pukes, has only happend a few times since birth. He was generally a very happy baby its just come on all of a sudden, went to Gp yesterday and they were no help at all so I will go to clinic today and see what they say!
i had not come across it before either until this time, my third child, he would vomit after every feed, well almost and he was extremely fussy on the breast. Like he wanted to feed but couldn't, gaping for the nipple even though it was right there in front of him. He was quite unsettled but slept OK at night. I queried this and was told they do sleep at night because they can get really exhausted, things to do are keep him upright as much as possible, longer periods between feeds and there are baby wind drops or reflux meds you can get but check with your health professional about these.
It is so hard to know what really goes on, we were using some windy drops and doing all the things they suggested but even to this day i wonder if he had it. I think, he probably did but he didn't scream with it as some babies do....hence the silent reflux.
Join the breastfeeding support group....i can send you an invite and i'll try to add a link to some more advice
I think there is some confusion about "Silent Reflux". Silent reflux does not mean that your baby does not scream or cry with reflux. It means that the "symptoms" are silent, not your baby. Babies with reflux often vomit or spit up, but a baby with silent reflux does so very little if at all.
Silent reflux babies suffer silently because there are no outward symptoms of reflux so a mother does not know her baby has it. In Silent Reflux the spit up comes up in the throat but does not come all the way up and out the mouth and/or nose. It comes up in the throat but then is swallow back down by the baby. Silent Reflux is worse than just reflux because it comes up, and then then also back down, buring the babies throat not once, but twice.
You can sometimes tell that a baby has Silent Reflux by listening. If you ever hear your baby swallowing like their drinking something, and he's not being fed, then chances are your baby has Silent Reflux. That's how we know my grandson had it. I would be holding him and all of a sudden he would start swallowing and it sounded like he was drinking something when he wasn't. Sometimes he would almost choke, but nothing would ever come up and out his mouth. Hope this helps!
Thanks thats interesting. I was just going by what i was told my son had.....they (health professionals) said he had 'silent reflux, ' and he vomited all the time but didn't scream although he did whinge a fair bit.
Good to hear an explaination because i had never heard of it before.
