Saving money - groceries

We are realy having trouble making ends meet at the moment. i watch every single penny we get, and are very frugal, but I was wondering if anyone else could help getting the grocery/ food bill down.

almost everything I buy is generic or no name brand. We all take homemade lunches to work/ school. Leftovers become lunch the next day so we don't waste food. We have fresh fruit and veg for the first half of the week and frozen veg for the second half, so any food going off is kept to a minimum.

Any other hints or things which minti parents can suggest? realy realy desperate here - any advice or hints please?

I love that you're not afraid to buy generic brands!

Be sure to buy only groceries at the grocery store. Pick up your personal items (toothpaste, shampoo, that yummy lotion that smells like vanilla cookies, etc.) at a discount store or pharmacy. Grocery stores often charge more for personal items.

Thanks!

If you go through the Bargain Barn group you may be able to find some ideas.

Re: Saving money - groceries

When things were tight here, I would buy a meat cut with a bone, so as to get a soup stock, and fish that lent itself to stock aswell. I baked every thing from biscuts, cakes, pancakes, scones and tatter breads. Soups I would bulk out with lentils, barley, potatoes, pasta or rice. Mince or stews, I would half the meat portion to get two meals from the meat and bulk up with veg and potatoes. Home made pies are good as they are very filling with the home made pastry, so you save on quantity. Vear towards cheeper seasonal veg and fruit. Look for kitchen cuboard alternatives for cleaning materials, I think there is a group here that covers those things. Do you have open farms where you live, so you can PYO veg, I am in britain and this is a great saver, as you pick it youself and no transport costs. If you have a freezer, you could look for "at the gate" meat, where you buy direct from the farmer, so much cheeper, than supermarkets. I would stay away from tinned goods, it is so much cheaper to make your own home made beans etc. Good Luck and hope things ease up for you soon.

Re: Saving money - groceries
I do alot of bulk buying, esp cans and dried items like rice and noodles.  I do alot of rice, just as meals them selves.  It is very hard as my money seems to go to the drinks as my daughter and I drink alot of juice and milk!!!  She does water too, but I'm always thirst, (BFing at the moment).  Anyway, like it was said below, bulk up your meals with rice and pasta, it's very cheap, and buy in bulk when things are on sale.  A tip is to watch how often things go on sale, and if you have the liberty check several stores for the best price.  If you know something goes on sale ever month, then buy that amount, so you won't run out and end up buying more at reg price.  Also look at all the brands, you'll be surprised that when reg brands so on sale, they can actually be cheaper then the generic brands.  Another thing I found is to look at the price where is tells you the pennies per oz or lbs.  This way you can see if something that is reg price is cheaper per oz (lets say) then something on sale.  I have found this to be true alot!  Hope that makes sense, and hang in there it'll get better!

Re: Saving money - groceries
Money is always an issue with families.  We have had our tough times too, but are getting there.  Our shopping is kept to a budget of $400 per fortnight, helps I'm not eating much at the moment.  My partner is the shopping king, and he gets the marked down meats and everything.  Having a deep freezer helps with that though.  We tend to stick to simple meals, only get frozen veggies and only get fresh fruit if it is at a lower price.

Noodles are very good for bulking up meals, as is rice.  Neither breaks the bank which is good.  Mince is versitile, and easy to cook for just about any meal.  We also get kangaroo meat on occasion (I confess!  I killed skippy!) because the dietry benefits are greater for the serving size.

We were buying bread in bulk too, but I'm off it so don't need to now.  Freezing as much as you can helps.  Bulk lot buys are great, saves money in the long run, but you pay extra on the day.  Crackers are reasonably cheap, and a nice change occasionally.

I hope you manage to find a footing soon.  It isn't nice to have to watch others around you pile a trolley high without a care, while you are walking around with a calculator in hand.  Oh, that's another tip, take one with you and add up totals as you go.

Re: Saving money - groceries

Hi there

It sounds as though you are really doing all the right things.  One thing that I used to do when times were tough, was to purchase things in bulk - nappies, toilet paper, school snacks etc.  The other trick is to only purchase when things are on sale.  I used to go to at least three different supermarkets chasing the 'on sale' items and I would walk or catch the bus to each to save on fuel money.

There are some articles on how to cope financially on the following site:

I have written a few articles on this topic and will have a sort through over the next few days and find them and post them on Minti for you.

Good luck, I hope things get easier very soon.

Cheers

Re: Saving money - groceries

Buying in bulk is usually cheaper in the long run and if you get the marked down bread etc, you could buy extra and freeze it.  Some cleaning products are really expensive and (i think) not necessary, for example stuff you put in the toilet, fabric softeners and a lot of those spray and wipe products.  Baking soda is really good for cleaning with and cheap or you could try making your own.

Hope this helps........

Re: Saving money - groceries
  1. Meat is the most expensive item to buy these days. I am in England, UK, so I am not sure if this applies to other countries. I tend to reduce amount of meat each meal and bulk up with veg and a side order of bread and butter or salad.
  2. Make your own veg soups.

Ok this is what works in my place.... Try and go shopping at the latest time of the day and thats when most shops mark down their breads, bakery and deli etc..

Collect catalogues and try and pick up specials... Also on minti there is groups where you can find quick and cheap recipes....

Hope that helps heaps...
