breastfeeding and work

hi there guys.

it looks like i may be going back to work pretty soon for a couple of days a week, tobias is 8 weeks old atm and for the admin side i can take him to work with me or work from home for the majority of it.

there will be one day a week though that he will definatly have to be in care and im just wondering how everyone has gone with breastfeeding and childcare?

i have a breastpump and i am happy to make up an emergency bottle of expressed milk a day but seeing as though our childcare is next door to my centre i think il prob just take my breaks and pop over to feed him.

do you find that most childcares support breastfeeding and work with you on it? i used to work in childcare but we never had this issue as all the kids that i cared for were bottle fed.

id love to hear from some  breastfeeding working mums and hear your experience with childcare and breastfeeding.

ps sorry to ask this q but ive never had to use expressed milk before how much do i need for one feed in each bottle and how do you reheat it?

Re: breastfeeding and work

hi there, in the same predicament except my boy (6 months old) won"t take to the bottle - have put him in daycare though and i put a little milk say 30ml in 3 bottles so that it wouldn"t get wasted if he didn't drink it but would probably recommend 120- 200ml depends on the baby - my daycare does support coming in an feeding - so i think you should be fine to do so- to reheat it - use boiling water - i.e sit the bottle in the water .. until the right temp - test on your wrist

Re: breastfeeding and work

How exciting Nat to be going back to work!  Adult stimulation woo hoo. (and not in the pervy way I know you are thinking)

I would suggest you pump at the end of each feed.  You can cool each "serve" and combine after cooled either in the fridge or frozen.  You can then thaw the frozen milk in the fridge and is good once thawed for 24 hours.  Or if you don't freeze is good for 3-8 days!. This link is helpful with lots of pumping info.

You probably want to make sure Tobi will take the bottle before you send him off to daycare...of course you would just thought I would mention it.

And, I am sure they would be more than happy for you to come and feed him.  Not only is it easy for him, would be easier on the care givers!

Good luck Nat!

Re: breastfeeding and work

ok. I never had my kids in care before they were weaned, But in the package i got from them they were more than willing to have mothers come in and feed their child.

Also when feeding via expressed milk you basicly just drain each breast after feeding making sure that you drink extra water/ or you can express both breasts on the day he is in care and take the bottle over.

to re heat you just put the bottle in boiling or hot water never put in mircowave as it kills all the goodness in it.
