Constipation in children

Does anyone have any ideas of how I can help my nine year old with constipation?  she is in a lot of pain and so far nothing is working.  I have never had this problem with her before and am hoping things get better soon.  Poor thing is very uncomfortable.

Hi my son Joseph who is 4 had a very bad bout of constipation and the doctor put him on Microlax Enemas he had one and then for the next two weeks he had Senokot every morning, senokot is a stool softener, The enemas work within 30min and he was back to his normal happy self!! Both of these can be bought over the counter here in Australia but im not sure if u can get them in the US. Hope this can be of some help!! Good luck

Re: Constipation in children

I don't think there's any harm in calling your child's doc and letting him or her know how long and how bad your kid's constipation is before giving her anything over the counter. I read a lot of the responses and they are all great. Prunes...my and my daughter's (and my mothers) best friend . And just stay away from starchy foods that bind. Like I said, everyone's recommendation is very good, but I would just make a quick call to the doc who has your daughter's medical history and according to that he or she can maybe give your girl a quick and easy fix. Hope everything "comes out" okay - pun intended.

Re: Constipation in children

My elders in the philippines believed in the power of prunes. Not just prune juice, but the prunes itself.

Also, you can look into stool softeners. I'm not sure if they are safe for children, but it's something to look into.

Good luck! I suffered from constipation often when I was about this age and my grandmother always threatened me with a suppository. Like I was holding it in on purpose! God bless her. She was a very funny woman.

Re: Constipation in children

my mum has a thing for olive oil...believes it will heal just about anything...we always are afraid to leave bub with her incase he comes back smeared with olive oil!!  however try placing a tablespoon of olive oil in his mash or vegs at lunch/tea should help somewhat

Re: Constipation in children

You can also use flax seed oil in their food as well to help cut down on constiaption if it happens on a regular basis. When mixed in they can't even taste it.

Re: Constipation in children

There is a new product out by the Metamucil brand that is designed just for kids.  You can mix it in with their food and apparently they can't taste the difference.  Also, porridge is supposed to be very good too, because oats are high in fibre and easier to digest than any other cereal or grain.

Re: Constipation in children

Prunes (my kids eat them like lollies when I give them to them) or prune juice - prunes themselves are better though. Pears or pear juice but NO apples at all as they actually constipate. Psyllium husks are great too - as Deb said. If it doesn't pass in a few days I would go to the chemist and get a stool softener for her. I hope she gets better soon!

Re: Constipation in children

Hi

Psyllium husks are pretty good too.

I sprinkle them on my breakfast or in my drink

They are a good source of fibre and pretty natural i think lol

Failing that yeah prunes are really good cheap and yummy too

Lots of water as well...like litres of the stuff

Luv Deb

Re: Constipation in children

Like everyone else has suggested try some purne juice and also prunes the're full of fibre and work a treat.  Have you tried All bran cereal in the morning??  Increase her water intake that will help too.  I found this link which may be very useful.

Hope she is going real soon.

Re: Constipation in children

100% orange juice, Prunes, prune nectar, lots of water, cereal with high fibre, high fibre breads and cut out the processed food and all should pass.

If she is feeling achey you can try a charcoal tablet.

Essentially its a wait and see if severe you can purchase gylcerine suppositories form the Pharmacy but this can be invasive and you may prefer to take her to the hospital.

A good balance of fibre and water should keep things moving when she has passed this point.

Best wishes.

Re: Constipation in children

I had this when Aaliyah was a baby (what am I talking about - she still is a baby! LOL! - she's 20mo), anyway, I once took her to the hospital when nothing seemed to be working and they gave her something that you place up the bottom and it softens the poos - sorry to be so graphic, but it does work. It's some kind of soft gel, but I can't remember what it's called. If it gets too bad, I would recommend going to the hospital, or you could ask the chemist and see if they sell it.

Re: Constipation in children

If the constipation is REALLY bad you can use regular over the counter laxitives on her. Just call the doc. to get the proper doses for her weight.

Re: Constipation in children

Yeah, it's not fun but it's effedtive KWIM

Whenever Jedd goes in-patient he needs one before we go home. Dont' know why. I gues the prolonged exposure to anesthesia causes it.....oh well, poor little one, can't be comfortable for them. :)~

Re: Constipation in children

Have you tried the prun juice?  That works like everytime for my girl...made that mistake by accident as a baby...also, you can give her a massage on her stomach.  Use firm pressure with both your hands going from the bottom of her rib cage toward her belly button and then to the sides...This helps to stimulate the muscles, and hopefully help relive the pain, and let her go....Take care!
