Kitty Litter Question

Hi Guys!

Atm my cat's kitter litter is located in our laundry, which Aaliyah is unable to access because of a child-proof gate we have placed in the doorway. Unfortunitely though, the toilet is accessed through the laundry and as we are starting to toilet train Aaliyah, we will soon need to take the gate down so that she can see what happens in the toilet when I go to the toilet (ie, watching what I do). However, I don't know what to do with the kitty litter! We have an indoor cat that requires kitty litter so that she can toilet somewhere, but I don't want Aaliyah to be able to access it so she can't "play" in it (YUK!).

For those of you with both cats and young children, what do you do about kitty litter? How do you teach them to leave it alone, or where do you place it? Aaliyah is 20 months old, so atm, no matter how many times I tell her "don't touch" I know she will occassionally go over there when my back is turned.

Re: Kitty Litter Question

I have a 16 year old indoor cat.  We actually have a gate infront of the doorway to the room the literbox is in. Right now I feel my daughter is not at a place where she'll understand "no" and a box full of colorful 'sand'.

They are so curious at this age and there are too many germs for her to be at risk of getting in a litterbox so I have kept a gate to keep her from entering that area. When she's a bit older and understand 'yucky' and garbage much better, I'll feel easier to give her access to that area.

Good luck!

Re: Kitty Litter Question

I already have one of these gates stopping Aaliyah from getting into the laundry where the cat sand is, but it also stops her following us to the toilet to watch what we do, and so I need to find a place to move the cat sand so I can remove the gate.

Re: Kitty Litter Question

ohhh I see. Okay. Hmmm...we have a bathroom and a powder room/washroom (no bathtub/shower) We've put our litter box in the powder room, and I keep the door open with the gate intact. My cat jumps over the gate to get to do her business and I climb over the gate. So my daughter sees that I'm 'going potty'. Is that an option for you? I've had to move my cat;s food and water to an area where my daughter won't try to eat or play with kitty's water . The things we do for love, huh?

Re: Kitty Litter Question

Is it possible to put it outside with a door thru the wall?  My parents had to do that and it works out great...otherwise maybe a closet or pantry that you could leave a bit open for kitty kitty to get into?  Good luck as I know this is a tough thing.

Re: Kitty Litter Question

Hi honey,

You can get Kitty litter trays that have dome lids on them, they look like a pet carrier and you can get them from pet stores or some online places such as Ebay . . . They have a clear top so that you can see when the litter needs changing ..

Cheers Kellz

Re: Kitty Litter Question

Is there somewhere up high you can put it that is out of bubs reach but fine for the cat? Like on top of the washing machine or something like that.

Re: Kitty Litter Question

Hey ,

I have 2 kittens who are also indoor cats (until barry has build littery) we found the most safe place for the cat litter was in he bathroom luckily my daughter (19 monhths) is toilet training so i keep the kitty litter beside the toilet and we have kittys toilet and big girls toilet and most of the time she leaves although sometimes temptation takes  over and she puts fingers in i tell her its dirty its kittys toilet and she must not touch although i did find with the stoney litter she was more tempted as its fun to play with i find with the wood she leaves it alone as pellets arnt as much fun and in your face as wooden pellets .

Luv Emz xx

Re: Kitty Litter Question

Is your litter in an enclosed box, http://www.zooplus.co.uk/google/-171/shop/cats/cat_litter_litter_boxes/hooded_litter_box?gclid=CK-FysLJp5ECFQuuQwodXFXPew, we got an enclosed  box with a swing door. It was too much trouble for Caty to bother with, and as it was enclosed it did not attract her like the open box had.

Re: Kitty Litter Question

Yeah, it's in an enclosed box, but without a door (ie, only has a hood that covers the tray, but leave the entry way open.

Any idea where to get the enclosed boxes here in Aus for low $$? Don't know if it would stop Aaliyah getting into it though, as she raids the bin even though that has a lid! LOL!

Re: Kitty Litter Question

Is it possible to wedge the barrier between the machine and the litter box leaving access to the toilet?

Is it possible to put it in the laundry sink, pop puss into the sink with it  for the first time and he'll/she'll hop down when he/she's finished and will find his or her way back to it.

You could also put it in the bathtub and simply pop it in and out as you require the bath.

I was fortunate I was able to leave the litter as was ans my toilet was in teh bathroom but these are the ideas I'd try, best wishes
