Baby vomits formula.

Hi out there,

3 nights ago I started my 5 week old baby on 1 bottle of formula through out the night and 2 out of the 3 he has vomited what seems like the whole bottle. Is this normal? Could he be reacting to the formula?

I also wanted to know how much he should be drinking. I make up the recommened dosage for his age but he struggles to drink it all. He usally will only drink 50 - 60 ml is this normal? He also takes a very long time, say 20 - 30 minutes.

Thanks to anyone that can help.

Re: Baby vomits formula.

Hi

Formula is not as easily digested as human-breastmilk.

From what you have said I am assuming that he is having breastmilk for the rest of his feeds and only one bottle of formula a day. Have you considered ditching the formula and just sticking to breastfeeding. It is far better for your baby's health and your wallet too.

If you are concerned about your milk supply maybe talk to the Australian breastfeeding association (or the breastfeeding organisation in your country) .

If baby not sleeping through is the issue then maybe try co-sleeping while breastfeeding. And remember that it isn't for ever. Baby will sleep through when he is ready to.

goodluck

cheers

Kim

If you are choosing to use formula then you may like to familiarise yourself about the risks first so that you can make an informed decision. You may like to read this information on the risks of artificial baby milk / formula.

Re: Baby vomits formula.

there is a way to work out how much your baby will drink according to weight. your chn will know that one but as for the vomitting try a different formula and make it up with the water first (lot of people do it the other way round.) rhiannon was on the heins formula from day 2 and she took it quite well but it took a few tins of other formulas to find out which one didn't make her puke!! funny enough we have always found the more expensive brands made her sick, too rich for he mesa thinks. she has had the heins one all the way through to 16months and it has served us well ::)'s hope this helps. from becca.

ps: used to have to sit there feeding rhiannon for nearly 40min each feed cause she has a tongue tie and couldn't suck any quicker. little chatterbox now, never shuts up hehehe!

Re: Baby vomits formula.

To this day my bubs never drinks the recommended dose of formula.   He may drink less but often, this is ok if he is happy, and putting on weight and growing etc.... he even tends to vomit up a bit.

Speak to your maternal child health nurse and she will be able to give you some guidence.  A baby in my mothers group drinks the recommened dose but still vomits up quite alot I think this is ok if, as I said he is happy and growing etc...

It takes, I think, some time to get used to the bottle and the formula so maybe try a low flow teat or a different bottle.

Hope it works out for you

Re: Baby vomits formula.

Hi there.

As the other mums have said it is a trial and error with bubs at this age,,, i recommend that you have a chat with your child health nurse., and see what formula she would recommend,., and usually when bubs are throwing up, it means that they are getting too much air... But at the end of the day if he is gaining weight and the health sister is happy, and bub and u are happy, then its all good,..

Please let us know how you got on,, and if we can help you more with your new bub...

Re: Baby vomits formula.

Yes there is a very high chance the formula is making bub vomit. IMO there is no need to give a perfeclty healthy baby formula if you are BF. Definately talk to the CHN about the issue but in the meantime stop giving the bottles and see if it improves.

Re: Baby vomits formula.

Hi,

You really should ask the doctor or health center nurse at your 6 week check up.

My daughter used to throw up every 3rd bottle but she was gaining weight & healthy so it was all good.

I would suggest you use a medium flow teat on the bottle, maybe its going to slow for bubs & he is getting tired.

Good luck,

Dee

Re: Baby vomits formula.

I too was going to suggest trying a slightly faster flow of teat also it may be trapped wind making him bring back milk it is quite normal for babies to bring back a small amount of milk but if you feel he is bringing back most of the feed then you need to seek medical advice from your health visitor or doctor.
