how much milk?

Hi, my babe is 9 mths and usually has 4 6 0z bottles at 8am 12, 4 and 8pm. He has started refusing his last bottle and often only drinks just over half the others. Im worried he not gettin enough. I realise there comes a time when solids take over but when is that time? Anyone else have a baby about this age and what do they take?

Re: how much milk?

Hi i think baby may just be telling you he is fine with what he is having at the moment. I was worryed the same when my daughter was doing the same thing and i was told by her nurse that she may just be full with what she has. As long as baby is putting on weight and seems satisfyed with whatever he puts in then alls good. Right now she eats 3 meals a day and has 3 bottles about 2 hours after each meal and she seems fine with that. She has about 8 - 9 oz each bottle. I wouldnt worry if i were you, as long as shes putting on weight then it shouldnt be a problem. If u are worried though then just call up a nurse and get sum advice.

Re: how much milk?

My granson 98 mths has knocked off his evening bottle he now sleeps 6 till 6 so we have taken his 4 th bottle and give him top ups through the day so breakfast, lunch and dinner and full (sometimes he drinks the lot others not) and morning tea and after noon tea and 1/2 bottles that way hes getting four. He also eats 3 times a day cereal with fruit, fruit with yoghurt, vegies and has 1/2 a bisucit or 1/4 veg toast at snack time.

The rule of thumb is if they are sleeping well and putting on weight and growing they are getting enough.

Re: how much milk?

I started weaning my daughter at 4 months just on a few spoonfuls of babyrice made with formula but as soon as she started on solids her milk intake went down, but i must stress that every child is different, Amy was a little and often baby where my neice of the same age would drink 9 ounces straight back but then not want anything for a while.

Re: how much milk?

It always gets stressed to me that children won't starve themselves and will eat when they need to. In saying that maybe try giving more solids? Milk is a meal in itself for children of that age. Other than that, all I can say is go with your "mum" instincts. Every child is different and no baby or child runs like a book...

Re: how much milk?

Hello Alyson, approx 24 oz is the norm for this age, though not all bubs, esspecially those who are getting enough solids, will drink the full amount. I had one who would struggle through 12-18oz a day, and one that would drink you out of house and home. Try not to worry, this sounds absolutely normal, and bubs usually know themselves just how much they need. He is probably getting enough solids, so milk is for calcium and vitamins, at this age rather than hunger, he sounds all good from here. Best Wishes.

Luv,Winnie.xx
