who helped you with spd?

today i visited my midwife a week early due to alot of pain in my back hips inside of legs and groin i explained that i was in tears doing simple tasks  like the washing etc and suffered mildly with my first child but never to this extream.

On arriving home again im in tears she told me to bend correctly etc but how can i do that with the pain it feels like trapped nerves but she dismissed spd all together, needless to say this is not my usual midiwfe...would the doctor be in a better position to help me? how much can they do?

Re: who helped you with spd?

I am also a fellow sufferer. A belly support belt helps me on really bad days. Like you i prefer not to take strong painkillers in pregnancy and panadol does not do it. Definatly go to your local pool and take a walk/swim/or just stand there. Its amazing how much this actually helps while you are in the pool and after.

Re: who helped you with spd?

Me again ive spoken to my gp surgery and im seeing a gp tomorrow after a chat on the phone they agreed it sounds like i need a support belt but possibly crutches, after having a bad night and my poor bf thinking i was in labour i really cant take any more of this, stubburn as i am i refuse to be on painkillers when i know theres other options t try first.

Thankyou all for your answers its nice to hear from fellow sufferers that understand, i forget who mentioned the waddle lol but im resisting best i can hehe xox

Hiya

Hey I dont wanna scare you but my best friend (member urshy) had something very similar to this but it turned out alot worse. She wrote about it...It happened to me..cant remember how to link so if someone else would help me out here, that would be great. Go into her member page and go thru to her advice and have a read, see if it applies to u and if your symptoms are similar. I cared for her every need for nearly 6 months and would hate to see anyone have to go thru that!

Re: who helped you with spd?

Ugh poor, I remember it well. A good number of dodgy midwives will dismiss this condition, I had one with Caty and I refused point blank to see her. If a midwife is willing to dismiss a known medical condition then what else is she not seeing. O.k firstly you are in the U.K so you should have free access to your local Maternity Hospitals services. Phone the Maternity Hospital and ask for the obstetric Physio, you are registerd so you dont need a referal from the midwife or GP. A link to physio tips to help you.

http://www.addenbrookes.org.uk/resources/pdf/patient_visitors/patient_information_leaflets/physiotherapy/physio_pubisdysf_pt_060803.pdf

This link should help give you some info to aid you. http://www.pelvicpartnership.org.uk/. Good Luck and dont suffer in silence, if you need aid with walking as time goes on, The Red Cross have a remit to supply women with SPD with crutches or zimmer frames. I would go see your GP and tell them what the midwife said, as this is not best practice. Best Wishes.

Re: who helped you with spd?

I have had this 4 out 5 of mine (including now) and it can be sooo painful.  The worst is when you are trying to sleep.  I have found that getting up and gentle walking helps to soothe it and gentle stretching too.

If you have access to a swimming pool, then walking in water will help too, as well as just generally take the weight off for a while.

On a scarier note (don't panic), I have found the worse I have suffered from it, the quicker my labours have been.

Re: who helped you with spd?

Also, try not to give in to the 'waddle', it actually causes your muscles to become weaker.  if you try and keep your walking as normal as possible, and keep your legs as close together as they were before the growing belly, you will have stronger abdominal and back muscles.  This also means an easier labour and birth because the muscles are actually working without expending too much energy.

Re: who helped you with spd?

If you're in pain go and get a second opinion. It's obvious you are not comfortable with the midwife's decision.

Re: who helped you with spd?

me thinks you need a physiotherapist! sounds like your muscles in your lower back are weak and your nerves are touching areas they shouldnt. i had a similar promblem in the past and saw a physio as it was the lower back muscles in my case( although i went to an osteopath first who told me this) i wore a special band to help support those muscles they have special bands as well for pregnant woman.

if you decide to go to a chiropractor maybe try a osteopath instead as they better equipped and have  more of anunderstanding of other medical interventions (unless you know a really good chiropractor, if your not familar with one dont take the risk while your pregnant)

Re: who helped you with spd?

I would talk to a chiropractor as this deals with the alignment of your pelvic bone, back and the simphysis grove.  If out of like can cause a tone of pain...A chiropractor can help to realign it and reduce or cure the pain...Good luck and feel better!

Re: who helped you with spd?

I go to a chiro and it is the best thing, I went b4 I was preggers, during and after.  As lillkatheryn says it is all about alignment of your pelvic bone and your spine.  It is also safe for the baby too.  I went up until I was about 35 weeks or so.  It will also help with trying to have a quicker labour.  Here is a link to some more info.

Re: who helped you with spd?

i can sympathise, as i suffered in my pregnancies with spd.

i was referred to a physio, which helped, and in my last pregnancy was on crutches at 32 wks!!!

try your best to get a physio referral, if not from your midwife then ask your gp.

good luck, lol lisa xxxx.

(this subject might be an idea for another article - based on my experience!)
