Re: Finger Food?

some bubs have a very strong gagging reflex and will take a lot longer to get the hang of more solid food. If this is the case, then don't feel pressured . She will gradually get it in her own time. My girl still has some trouble at 16 months but is on her way. I consulted with doctors and a speech specialist and it is very normal. Gradually increasing the chunkiness will help with offers of soft finger food like little bits of banana. By little, i mean very little to start with and see how she goes.Rusks are good to try to, so she gets used to different textures and sizes of things in her mouth. Don't worry, she will do it in her own time.

Re: Finger Food?

I was given sum good advise from my babys nurse. I had the same problem with my little one (who is 1 now) until just last week when she started eating chunkier food. Since im a tidy freak and hate mess my nurse told me to leave her with her food let her touch it and get messy and explore the texture of it all and put it in her mouth at her own pace. So i did this and now shes eating pieces of toast, bananas, rusks (even biting into them) and cheese. Shes also eating mashed food now and accepts pieces of food from our plate. I let her get messy now coz i've learned that she needs to explore her food. I hope this works for u.

Re: Finger Food?

i would follow her developmental cues over her age, personally.  continue to give her opportunity to experiment and play with food, so she can try to chew without being under pressure to eat or make progress on a meal.

I think sticking to the softer, mushy foods might be best, but encourage her to chew on harder things too.  There are toddler biscuits you can get that encourage chewing and the popping through of teeth.

Re: Finger Food?

yes she does need to learn how to chew BUT with only 2 teeth foods such as sausages and chop really aren't appropriate BECAUSE the child doesn't have enough teeth to be able to CHEW the food enough to be able to swallow the food without choking.

Re: Finger Food?

teeth or no teeth they will gumm it to bits  lol .so slowly introduce more chunky food untill she is eating what you eat. practice makes perfect so it might be messy to start with but keep giving her chunky veg  and if she refuses it let her feed herself it will make tea time fun for her and she will be more likely to eat it.there is a bit of advcie on minti about it i will see if i can find some and i will link it up for you

Re: Finger Food?

Rusks, toast and fruit are excellent finger foods. You could also try making her food slightly more chunky gradually, bit by bit. Good luck

Re: Finger Food?

real soft things are great for teething kids. Alex loved banana and the rusks where poor Charlie was born when Banana's were $12 a kg so she didnt get many, but still loved them.

i know rusks are hard but they melt too. vegimite toast is a great one too cut into 2cm fingers, some kids prefer the crust removed. jam is also good, but that is on whether you are ok with giving your kids sweets.

but you need to do what you feel is right. if she isnt coping with hard food then limit it. if she loves the pured stuff keep giving it to her.

My kids had all their front teeth by 2 so hard food was fine for them, but kids teeth differently. ( my daughter only just got 1 of her cainien teeth last year at 3)

good  Luck

Re: Finger Food?

hi there.

Toast fingers are a good finger food for bubs first starting to get used to finger foods. Also you can chop up fruits like watermelon and banana and give them as finger foods also. They are nice and soft and 'fleshy' as such and so she shouldn't have any issues with chewing them and she shouldn't choke on them!

Hope this helps.
