Clarity of Speech

My Daughter is 3 & 1/2 and is really struggling with certain sounds eg, L and R. Instead of saying Lovely she says Wovely and Wubbish instead of rubbish.

Is it too soon to think of a speech therapist?????

Thanx in advance

Flossy

Re: Clarity of Speech

Hi fairyfloss-love yor username by the way! My son had speech therapy but for different reasons. He used to be really slow in getting his words out and repeat the first few letters of a word. I think a lot of children have problems pronouncing w and so on,it's part of their learning curve. I didn't really think my sons speech was aproblem until he went to nursery and they referred him to a therapist. Even now aged 9 he says repeating letters sometimes eg Titanic is TI TI TI TI TANIC and creme caramel is CREM CREM CREM CARAMEL. It doesnt happen a lot but obviously the problem is still there somewhere. Bye, Loopy.

Re: Clarity of Speech

Great advice from others! No need to stress yet! There are a great number of children that begin Transition or Reception at the age of 4 that have similar speech patterns. it is not usual to worry about these speech patterns unless they show no progress around 6 years of age. If a child reaches this age, the child is usually assessed for hearing difficulties before other avenues are explored.

Re: Clarity of Speech

mumkim (who used to go as mum2bkim, i think) has written some excellent articles about speech and speech therapy screening for children.  i would go look at her home page--seriously, she has the best information on this topic on minti!  best of luck!

Re: Clarity of Speech

Thanks Jen.

Both the errors you mention sound age appropriate. Can't remember the age for 'l' off the top of my head (2 years since I worked professionally) but the average age that 'r' should have been aquired by is 5 years.

In short - don't worry. No need to see a speechy at this stage if it is just those two errors.

Re: Clarity of Speech

My daughter is almost 4 and still having the same problem.  We do try to get her to slow down with her talking and pronounce the words properly.

If all else fails, at least our girls will understand each other! lol.

Re: Clarity of Speech

Slowing her down is a great idea, I think she has a tendency for quick speech

Thank-you

Re: Clarity of Speech

Hey, one of my twin neices use to talk the same way, like instead of rabbit it wud be wabbit. She is 6 now and no longer talks that way.I think some children take a little longer to make out the sounds and most pick it up once they start school.I had a lisp when i was younger and no longer do,i think it when away when i started school.Yes there are some ppl who still use the w instead of r but i wud wait awhile as your child is still young. If your really concerned see your family doctor you will refer you to a speech therapist.

Not much, but i hope ive helped a little.
