why is my 4 year old still peeing at night?

I have a problem. My son is 4 1/2 been potty trained since he was 2.  He is now 4 1/2 and still peeing at night. I have tried waking him to go at night, making him go before bed and no drinks for 1 hour before. I have recently potty trained my 2 year old daughter and she has had only one accident since she was trained. I need help b/c now that his little sister does not wear a diaper  to bed he has even asked her how she does not go in her pants at night . It makes me so sad to see how upset he gets. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Re: why is my 4 year old still peeing at night?

Hi,

I have a 31/2 year od that still wets every 4th or 5th night. I have decided that a nappy, even a pull  up,  extends the problem. She knows that she has a nappy on and when she wakes up in the morning, will wee in it instead of going to the toilet. Since I stopped putting any sort of nappy on, she has improved. I think that they get so used to weeing in the nappy as it is much easier than getting up and going to the loo that when they are half awake, they think the nappy is still on! I don't restrict fluids as it is very hot where we live. I take her to the toilet before I go to  bed at 10.30 / 11.00 p.m and most times, she remains dry. I praise  her on the mornings she is dry and get her to help me strip the bed and wash her sheets on the mornings she is not. I don't make a big deal about it as she then wets the bed more often! We had 15 dry nights  in a row before we went away. While we were away, we didn't always have a plastic bedsheet so I stuck a nappy on.....back into weeeing at night! We are now back into no nappy and have had 3 accidents in 2 weeks..... good luck!

Re: why is my 4 year old still peeing at night?

Firstly all kid's are different and develop at different stages. My oldest was still wetting the bed up until he was 6.....not every night as we would take him to the toilet before we went to bed at about 12pm, (huggies night time pull-ups are great) when he turn 6 he stopped all of a sudden. Just let him know that it's completely normal and when his body is ready it will stop happening. My 3 year old stays dry all night.......all kids are different and there isn't a rule that says they should all be toilet trained at a certain age. Just let him know that it doesn't matter and don't make a big deal out of it......just change him and shower him and put him back to bed.....never make him feel like he's done something wrong as that may cause a set back.

Boys often have this problem for a lot longer than girls do.  As to how to help him?  I don't really think there is anything you can do for now.  There are special night time pull up underpants that you can get from the super market so maybe you should try those.

Re: why is my 4 year old still peeing at night?

you may like to extend the 1 hour before to a drink only with his meal at dinnertime and instead increase fluids for breakfast, morning tea, lunch + afternoon tea + even providing a water bottle all throughout the day. Then, by dinner time we are strict only allowing a cup size drink with dinner, not his large water bottle. Then our son goes to wees before dinner, after dinner, again before bath, then before sleep (we are also sure he goes in the bath much to our bemusement - lol). If he has been for a swim we increase the times he goes (which is a few more than normal on our grass in the back yard), and us hosing it down - lol...

Our son is 3 and a half, and we have adopted this routine since 2 and a half and has not wet the bed and has never wore a night time nappy ever. He only wet his bed once when we initially started back at the age of 2 and a half. A year later and still dry all through the night, from 8:30/9 ish throught to 6:45/7am

hope this helps
