Baby constipation

Bubs hasnt done a poo in 2 days. Is this normal or should i get something for him to help. He is breastfed and having 2 solid feeds a day.

I am getting a bit worried coz he usually does one every morning and most of the time another one in the afternoon too.

Thanks, Cass

Re: Baby constipation

There is a lot of advice as well as previous discussions about constipation which you can find in the Minti archive. I've attached some of the advice in the "related content" bit.

Re: Baby constipation

Hi Cass, my little one had exactly the same problem when he started eating solids. it is common for breastfed babies not to poo everyday, and i like you freaked out when mine hadn't done one in a few days. i tried the tiniest bit of prune juice in the solids or give some pumpkin, that worked every time for my litle one. good luck!

Re: Baby constipation

hey cass,

i called up a Nurse Phone Hotline about this once and they told me to give Alisha cool boiled tap water...
after I gave it to Alisha, she pooed that day !

Basically, just boil some tap water... wait a few hours till it's really cool...
then give it to him through a special baby bottle or cup...
If he's not drinking by himself yet, just give it to him through a syringe :)

I like to give Alisha water so she digests solids better :)

hope i'm of "some" help. lol

Re: Baby constipation

Hey Cass,

I wouldn't worry too much, constipation can happen when you introduce solids.  Try buying some prune juice and just add a small bit to his cereal in the morning.  This is what I did when bubs was a bit constipated.  He is not breast fed but now he is on 3 good meals a day and goes about 3 times a day..  LOL

Hope is pooing real soon for you!!!

Re: Baby constipation

My bf son did this and didnt go for 10-14 days (cant remember excatly) I was really worried until i spoke to the child health nurse who produced a book/manual that state the longest a healthy bf baby had gone without pooswas 31 days. As others have said wait a little and he will make up for it. Pooing is a way to get rid of our body waste. breast milk has everything they need and does not leave much for waste.

Re: Baby constipation

Usually introducing solids will change their pooing schedule. My girls did the same thing. They go for longer and their poos are a bit more solid compared to when they are just having breastmilk.
