All cats do carry toxoplasmosis, so it is important that you are very careful.  As long as you wash your hands in an antibacterial soap after cleaning the litter tray, then you should be ok.  I don't know what the symptoms are, but I've been told that you will know if you have it as it is a pretty nasty thing to get.  My step dad had it when he was younger and was seriously ill for about 6 months.  That was back in the days before there was an awareness of it.

I am sure there is a blood test you can do so pop into the doc and ask them. Also I think if you washed your hands thoroughly with soap after you should be ok as its not easily contracted.

Congratulations on your pregnancy

Like you, I had the very same worry!!! I got two cats at the end of 2006, not thinking that I would have any more babies, and then in early 2007 I fell pregnant!!!

I am not sure if you can have a test for it, but I did read about toxoplasmosis, and if I remember correctly, it's actually a parasite that's lives in uncooked meat.  Also, cats can pick it up from outside when they are going to the toilet if it's lingering around from other cats.  My cats are only inside cats, so I didn't have a problem there, and also, my cats don't like can cat food, so they only eat the dry food.

To be honest, I don't know of anyone that has ever got toxoplasmosis, but if you are really concerned, it would be an idea to ask your doctor.  It's not fun worrying about it all of your pregnancy, and that's exactly what I did.  It was all unnecessary worry as my baby is happy and healthy!!!

It's probably best to get someone else to empty the kitty litter instead, or wear thick rubber gloves when disposing of the litter as infection occurs when you come in physical contact of the faeces.
