Toxoplasmosis question

I bought a cat about 2 months ago. I found out I was pregnant a few days ago. Not knowing I was pregnant, I have been cleaning out the kitty litter. I have never had another cat in my life, so I probably haven't been exposed to toxoplasmosis.

I'm just wondering, do all cats carry this disease? Would I know if I had contracted it? I'm really worried about my baby. Any info would be great.

Thanks!!

Re: Toxoplasmosis question

All cats do carry toxoplasmosis, so it is important that you are very careful.  As long as you wash your hands in an antibacterial soap after cleaning the litter tray, then you should be ok.  I don't know what the symptoms are, but I've been told that you will know if you have it as it is a pretty nasty thing to get.  My step dad had it when he was younger and was seriously ill for about 6 months.  That was back in the days before there was an awareness of it.

Re: Toxoplasmosis question

I am sure there is a blood test you can do so pop into the doc and ask them. Also I think if you washed your hands thoroughly with soap after you should be ok as its not easily contracted.

Re: Toxoplasmosis question

Hello,

Congratulations on your pregnancy

Like you, I had the very same worry!!! I got two cats at the end of 2006, not thinking that I would have any more babies, and then in early 2007 I fell pregnant!!!

I am not sure if you can have a test for it, but I did read about toxoplasmosis, and if I remember correctly, it's actually a parasite that's lives in uncooked meat.  Also, cats can pick it up from outside when they are going to the toilet if it's lingering around from other cats.  My cats are only inside cats, so I didn't have a problem there, and also, my cats don't like can cat food, so they only eat the dry food.

To be honest, I don't know of anyone that has ever got toxoplasmosis, but if you are really concerned, it would be an idea to ask your doctor.  It's not fun worrying about it all of your pregnancy, and that's exactly what I did.  It was all unnecessary worry as my baby is happy and healthy!!!

Take care,

Tanya.

Re: Toxoplasmosis question

Thanks Tanya, I just read an article Amanda gave me a link to, and it said there is actually a blood test that will let you know if you have been infected or not. It also said that there is only a small risk that babies can get affected from it (though theres still a risk).
I wasnt planning on this baby (well, maybe not for a couple of years anyway) so I thought getting the kitten would be no problems. She too is an indoor cat, but I'm not sure how well the people I bought her from treated her, thats what I'm worried about!

Re: Toxoplasmosis question

It's probably best to get someone else to empty the kitty litter instead, or wear thick rubber gloves when disposing of the litter as infection occurs when you come in physical contact of the faeces.

Here is a great web site I found with some information. I hope the link works!!!

Re: Toxoplasmosis question

Thanks Amanda, it was quite reassuring actually! I will probably just get my doctor to do a blood test when I go for my next visit just for peace of mind.
