We have started giving our son rice cereal as a first solid. Over the course of the last two weeks each time he's gotten red splotches with white bumps on his face and now his neck, (hives?). It gets worse each time. Now we've switched brands and still only a little bit of a reaction but it's getting worse each time as well, though it doesn't seem to bother him at all. We have one more brand to try. I'm going to take him to the doctor, but I'm wondering what I do next. Our daughter has no allergies; we have no family history of it at all. What do I feed him? Am I just worrying for nothing? Could this just be a reaction to this particular cereal or do I have to prepare myself for a lifetime of special food requirements? Any advice on how to deal with this would be so helpful!!
Hi, I would certainly get him tested for allergies. If he is having a reaction each time to the cereal, I would say thats whats causing it. What are you mixing it with ? Breastmilk or formula? Is it what he usually drinks?? ( I know some Mum's breastfeed, but make up the rice cereal using formula- I did as I just couldn't seem to express!) As Rice cereal is so basic and has a low allergy risk and he seems to react to that, it is important to know if he is at risk of severe allergies before introducing other foods. See your Doctor and get a referal. Boiled pureed pupkin is usually a good option if you want him to try solids until he can be tested
There is one test you can do at home to see if it is the cereal he is reacting to. When you mix it up, rub a little onto the inside of his wrist. If he reacts there, then I would say he does have an allergy. if he doesn't, then I would have to wonder if the material of the spoon you use could be causing the problem.
Hi. It certainly does sound like he may have an allergy. I would take him to the doctor as there is tests they can do to confirm. Perhaps try him on some pureed fruit instead until you know for sure. Good luck & keep us posted.
Dont panic until you have seen the doc, sometimes kids grow out of allergies, im pretty sure they have a method of figuring out these things. Just try not to panic, it will be ok
