Is my milk drying up?

There are a few reasons why i am asking this question...

1. For the past couple of days my son has been biting me. He did this when he first got teeth, and he stopped it after a couple of times, but it is like a frustrated bite now. Like he is saying, nothing is happening Mum!

2. When he woke up at 12 last night, i tried to feed him to settle him and he bit me so hard he drew blood, so instead of persisting, i gave him a bottle of formula. Normally he wont take it, but last night he drank it like he hadn't been fed in a week!

3. I havent actually felt a letdown in a few days either. I usually feel it every feed, but i have felt nothing. My breast also dont seem to feel so full when he is due for a feed either. When i express i can still milk, but i am wondering if there is enough there to satisfy him.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cass xx

Re: Is my milk drying up?

See if anything here helps. Otherwise I'd recommend talking to someone from the breastfeeding association.

My bubs bites atm too. Not happy about that!

Cheers DA

Re: Is my milk drying up?

How old is he now?

It is quite possibly a growth spurt. If you let him breastfeed on demand, your supply should catch up in a couple of days. Biting, however frustrated he might be, is not on, though. Either break him off with your pinky or mash his face into your boob (gently) to cut off his airways to force him to unlatch, then take a break. But, yes, I've had my fair share of growing babies getting upset about breasts emptying too quickly. Consider it his very first lesson in patience.

And I can totally understand not having the energy for it at midnight and going for the bottle and some decent sleep (particularly after somebody has tried to remove one of your nipples!!), but try not to do it too often. Every bottle reduces the time your nipples are stimulated and your ducts emptied, which will in turn tell your body to decrease supply; exactly what you don't want.

And I haven't felt any let down in years. (Wow, I can say years. )

He may just be going through a growing stage. Not sure how old he is but he may be ready for solids too

Re: Is my milk drying up?

Hi Cass. I am not sure if your milk is drying up or not, although there shouldn't be a reason for it if you are breast feeding all the time. Perhaps try pumping some & see what you get. Emmysmum had some great suggestions too with the massage & bras not tight etc. Hope this helps.

Re: Is my milk drying up?
Do you have a pump? You could see how many ounces you've got each feeding by pumping it first. Then at least you'd have an idea of whether it's possible he's still hungry. I ended up weaning my son at 8 months for similar reasons. He's a big boy and I just couldn't keep him satisfied. Breastfeeding purists might tell you otherwise, but for us, everyone was happier with him on formula for three months--we put him on whole milk at 11 months with the doctor's ok.

Re: Is my milk drying up?

Hey Cass,

I am bottle feeding but hoping to be of some help lol. If you don't do this already, then stimulation of the breasts (like massaging etc), don't wear your bra too tight and also, when in the shower, let plenty of hot water flow on them. Another thing you could do to get that milk supply back up, is to express your milk every 2 or 3 hours and give it to austin until your boobs are full again!

Hope this helps!
