Food issues, how to deal with them

I never realised how much your not supposed to eat while pregnant! I am just reading a brochure on foods to avoid and I have eaten one or two of them in all of my pregnancies.

Why is it that we can't eat ham? I never eat ham from the deli while pregnant, I buy it in the packages at the supermarket. I guess I have to give it up?

Another question. My mother in law is quite hopeless when it comes to food preparation. I honestly can't believe they don't get sick that often! They eat food thats past its used by date (all the time they do this, it seems they never check the dates), she defrosts chicken and meat on the kitchen sink (sometimes she leaves it there all day) and she leaves prepared food out for longer than 2 hours, then puts it in the fridge and eats it the next day! I find it hard to give her the kids for a play at her house cos I'm worried they will give the kids bad food (and yes, my kids have had diarrhea a couple of times after being at their house).

I don't want to offend her, but so many times we go to their house for dinner I end up not eating (and probably offending her) because of all the reasons I listed above. And now that I'm pregnant I'm even more wary. I feel the only way I can avoid eating her food is by not going over there at all, which is NOT going to happen as we probably go there at least once a week for tea. How should I deal with this food problem? Or am I just being overreactive about this?? The reason I ask, by the way, is because I'm an emetophobic (extreme fear of vomit/vomiting) who barely trusts my own cooking, lol.

Re: Food issues, how to deal with them

I don't listen to what I am supposed to and not supposed to eat during pregnancy.  As long as it is fresh prepared with fresh ingredients, I am happy.  Yup, still eating sushi and had no probs with it yet.

The reason why the MIL and her household doesn't get sick is because they are used to things being this way and their stomaches are stronger and better able to handle the bad bacterias.  Bet they don't get sick with colds and things as much either.

if you are really concerned, you could probably try to plan to go over there between meals.  And be sure to eat a lot before you go over to her house so you are full.  As for the list of foods you can't eat, I think part of the deli meat thing is also a sodium issue.  Deli meats have lots of salt in them and sodium will make you swell.

Re: Food issues, how to deal with them

hey i think you will be fine eating some of the foods you enjoy that you shouldnt eat while preg if you are careful.

i DIDNT eat anything that i wasnt supposed to eat if it was prepared by other ppl, i wouldnt eat it if i didnt know how long it had been out ect. listeria is in refrigerated food and often foods to avoid CAN be eaten if prepared carefully and correctly. what i would do is tell ppl the foods i couldnt eat but if i REALLY wanted ham/eggs ect  id get them myself fresh cook the eggs myself or eat the refrigerated food THAT day and not put it in the fridge. i never ate anything that had sat int he fridge for more than 24 hours and my docs said this was fine even with the high risk pregnancy i had.

just DONT let anyone else know you still eat them haha

good luck!

I have always eaten most things on the forbidden list. But I never eat it out or at other peoples houses. I haven't had any issues either.

Re: Food issues, how to deal with them

It must be a mother/MIL thing, my mum is the same and my MIL is twice as bad..... MIL & FIL by everything in bulk when on special, if they need it or not..... so even their UHT milk goes out of shelf date before they still use it....

maybe like others have said, just drop suttle hints as to some interesting topics you have been reading up on lately.... "did you know (MIL name) that while preganant, they say it's not healthy for the baby if i eat..... blah blah blah" start a big conversation on it, with out targeting one person in general..... just idle chit chat.... might work, but its hard to teach older generations things..... believe me.....

I wouldn't so much say i have a fear of vomiting, yet i hate it so much, and feel like im choking to death..... but i think my body has a fear of it, as i can go years without vomiting.... can be very sick and feel the urge to, but my body just doesn't allow itself to remove the bug..... My grandmother is the same.... I could honeslty say that i think i have vomitied once in about 9 years!!!!! but it is interesting to know there is an actual phobia of vomiting....

best of luck

Re: Food issues, how to deal with them

Maybe show your MIL the brochure- exclaiming that you never realised how many things c ould be dangerous to eat while pregnant etc, etc!!! This could lead to a discussion re: lIsteria and how you can avoid/ prevent risk! May just help out a bit! You aren't "having a go" at her this way and it may just give her a nudge in the right direction! Maybe invite them to your house once a week for dinner!  I know what you mean about use by dates, my MIL is hopeless!Love her to bits, but don't know how she hasn't had food poisoning! We all joke about the science experiments in her fridge!  I do a cull on her fridge whenever we visit!

Re: Food issues, how to deal with them

The reason we can't eat certain foods from the deli is because of LISTERIA. It is a very dangerous form of food poisoning that can harm the baby. I have linked a advice article for you to read. To get more info just search LISTERIA.

Hmm as for defrosting food on the sink... I do it and I have never gotten sick. So I don't know about that one.

Re: Food issues, how to deal with them

Thanks for that link. I found out you can't eat ham because of nitrates. I very rarely eat stuff from delis (even while not pregnant I avoid it), so I'm not too worried about listeria.

My inlaws haven't got sick from defrosting meat on the sink either, I just panic when they leave it out all day and it actually gets kinda warm-ish! I just don't think thats very healthy.
