Oxygen to the baby

I was just wondering if someone could tell me about sleeping when pregnant. I have heard around that you should sleep on a certain side to help blood flow to the baby upping the oxygen? Can you tell me firstly if it's true? And which side? And how it works!!?

Thanks :)

Re: Oxygen to the baby

Like everyone said, it's a matter of good circulation to the baby.

With my first pregnancy, I followed the dos and don'ts and slept mostly on my left side. Thankfully, it turned out to be the most comfy position anyway.  With my pregnancy with the twins, I found that yes, the left side was more comfortable then being on my right side, but being on my back was the most comfortable. In this case, I mostly slept on my back - the heck with sleeping on my left!   Being my 2nd pregnancy, I was less terrified... which also holds true with my twins. Being the 2nd and 3rd, I'm less anal about things. LOL

Good luck to you and keep us posted!

This is true!  You should lay as much as you can on your left side to promote better blood flow to bubs.  Same with putting a pregnant woman into the recovery postition.  It also takes the extra strain of the mothers heart.

Re: Oxygen to the baby

The only thing I know about this is that you shouldn't sleep on your back.  I found it very difficult during my last pregnancy because if I slept on my side my hip would ache the next day.

I believe that sleeping on your back reduces the blood flow to the placenta.  I hope this helps.

Re: Oxygen to the baby

hi

In some information that i was given at antenatal class it says that u should sleep on your side as lying on your back will cause a reduced blood supply to your baby, but it doesnt say any particular side is better or worse than the other so just avoid sleeping on your back.

hope thats helps

Re: Oxygen to the baby

Surprisingly enough, I noticed when I was pregnant that if I tried to lay on my right side, it just felt really uncomfortable.  So it just felt better to sleep on my left side (and was better for the baby thanks to all the artery stuff the girls before me have explained so well!)  It seems strange but it's great that sometimes your body will just tell you what is right and what is wrong.

Re: Oxygen to the baby

They say to sleep on the left side, that's the best.  Reason being is that the major artery that runs down the back to the legs lies off to the  right side of the spine.  And after a certain time of being pregnant the weight from the uterus and the baby can limit the flow of blood to the lower extremities and the baby.  And if you lie on your back this will cause the most pressure on the artery.  Though it is safe to sleep on your back for short periods of time (like if you wake up and your are on your back).  I have never heard of any thing bad happening to the baby from sleeping on your back, honestly.

Re: Oxygen to the baby

I was told to sleep on the left side to promote better blood flow.apparently this keeps one of the main arteries open(can't remember what it is called) and not to sleep on your back.
