Homemade ideas?

Hi All!

Was just wondering if you guys have any good homemade playdough or paint receipes? I'm wanting to do some creative things with Aaliyah, but she's only 2 (in May) , and I don't have money to go down to the shop and buy paints and things atm lol. Any other homemade creative ideas welcome too!

Paper Mache - Not sure if Aaliyah is ready for this yet but I remember when i was little my mum used to make glue using flour and water, you could rip up old newspapers and use the glue to stick the newspaper onto an inflated balloon when its dry let her paint it.  If you get creative you can add pieces of cut up egg cartons to make feet and a nose and turn it into a paper mache pig!

Re: Homemade ideas?

oh... another REALLY easy one is just give her a container of water, and a big paintbrush and let her "paint" the fence or outside wall of the house!

They do this one at my son's kinder all the time!

Simple and NO clean up!!!

Re: Homemade ideas?

non-menthol, plainjane shaving cream is very fun to play with on the walls of the tub before bath time.  kids can draw into and it washes off clean.

Re: Homemade ideas?

Hi,

I have a couple of recipes for you....

PLAYDOUGH:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup cooking salt
  • 1 tablesppon cooking oil
  • Food colouring of your choice
  • With a wooden spoon, mix flour, water and salt in a saucepan over a medium heat until think. When it has cooled, add the oil and knead well on a well floured board.

Divide the dough in equal portions to the amount of coloured dough you want (ie, if you want blue, red and yellow, divide 3... if you want more colours then just divide as required). Alternatively, if you want plain dough then just leave out the food colouring. Then just knead the dough again until the colour is mixed through. Store in an seperate containers until required.

    EDIBLE PLAYDOUGH:

(Please note: This recipe contains peanuts so should not be used for children who suffer from allergies to nuts!)

    Ingredients:

  • Peanut paste
  • Milk powder
  • Sugar
  • Food colouring of your choice
  • Mix one part peanut paste to one part milk powder, and half a part of sugar. Double or triple quantities depending on how much you want. Add some food colouring if desired.

    GOOP:

    Ingredients:

    • Cornflour
    • Food colouring
    • Water

Tip cornflour into a bowl, add a few drop[s of food colouring and a little water , until it is the desired consistency.

Spread a plastic tablecloth over a table outside (very messy!) and tip the goop out. Children love drawing, playing and feeling the goop.

When the goop starts drying out, simply add a little more water to make it runny again.

When your child/children have finished playing, spoon the goop into a plastic container with a lid and store it away. The goop will dry out but can be restored to its gooey consistenct by simply adding some water.

I found these recipes in the book '365 TV-Free Activities for Toddlers' by Di Hodges.

Word of warning though... when my son did these the food colouring tended to stain his hands so he had hands like a smurf for a day or two!!

    Re: Homemade ideas?

    Microwave Playdough

    3 Cups Plain Flour

    1/2 Cup Salt

    3 Tablespoons Oil

    6 Teaspoons Cream of Tartar

    3 Cups of water

    Food Colour

Mix all together in a microwave safe bowl with lid. Cover and place in Microwave on HIGH for 7 minutes. Stirring at about 3 1/2 minutes.

Once cooked, let cool for a few minutes then knead whilst warm until it has become nice and smooth.

Keeps well in an air tight container in fridge.

NOTE: I use to not add colour in the mixture at first, when finished cooking i would divide the mixture into 4 and add different colours (ie, blue, red, green and yellow) while i was kneading the dough....

I would then place the different colours into clip lock bags and then in the fridge....

My kids had hours of fun with it, and because it didn't cost much to make i didn't mind what they did with it, they mixed it up to make thier own colours....

Once again good luck with you play dough making!!!!

    Cheers
