Re: when??

Haha yeah I was the same. I brought those maternity pads because the hospital ones are crap, and the '6 weeks or bleeding' was only 4 days heavy and 6 days light for me.

Re: when??

Hey Dannii,

For the first I didn't even pack my bag as I was going to do it the night before I got induced. Then that night my waters broke LOL I was running around the supermarket getting maternity pads gushing water (in a pad of course) LOL I was in hospital for 9 days as he tore me pretty bad and I was in agony.

Second time around I packed the bag at 7 1/2 months. One bag for me one for bub. The hospital gave me a list. It was a waste of time because I left the hospital 8 hours later as I was fine to leave... I wanted to leave 2 hours later but they wouldn't let me haha

Re: when??

You may as well start packing it now because there will be things you think of later that you will want to add to it or take out..

I had my baby 8 weeks ago in victoria and the hospital did not supply anything.  I would suggest you take lots of undies and atleast 6 pairs of pants....i went through three pairs before i was moved into the delivery suite ( from my waters breaking) and straight after the birth i went through about 3 more from all the bleeding.  Make sure you take some plastic bags to put all your soiled clothes in for hubby to take home and wash.

Don't forget your shampoo & conditioner, soap, toothbrush & paste and deodorant...money for the cafe because hospital food is generally pretty unappetizing.

Another thing to remember is some lip balm, your lips will probably dry out from the airconditioning.

Hubby can bring in anything you might need while you're in hospital....

Re: when??

I usually didn't have mine packed til a week before. Just check with your hospital they will be able to tell you what you have to bring. If you are having any concerns later in the pregnancy, you might want to have your bag packed earlier.

Re: when??

Apart from what everyone else has said don't forget about your BF  make sure that you take your camera!!!!,  Your mobile so your bf can go outside and ring the most important people.  Some change so that you can get something to eat. (you may be up all night)  Take some lollies to suck on ie: barley sugers.  If it is a long labour you may need these and you can get very dry.  Get BF to take his swimers, towel  incase you dicide to get under the shower or in the bath.  That way he can be with you.

I got a good list of what to take for everyone (me, bubs and partner) from the hospital.  Half the stuff they recommened I didn't use.  The hospital I went to supplied nappies but at a small cost.

Make sure baby is warm, Take some good wraps and grow suits, bonds supply good ones and a size 0000 -000 is good, about 6.

PJ's are good and if you are going to Breast feed, tops that button down the front work well.

I had 2 bags one for me and one for bubs and my partner.  LOL

What every you forget just get some one to bring it in when they visit.  I had my bag packed at about 35weeks.

Re: when??

Hi Dannii

I had my hospital bag pached at 36 weeks.. then unpacked, then repacked... hehe

If you go to the hospital - i assume you have already been to maternity and been shown around - go in and ask a nurse for a list of what you will need. They usually supply all that when the show you around but they may have forgotten.

Everyone else has covered it, but considering you will have bub in winter, i really do recommend slippers and (loose fitting) trackies.

Dont stress too much, if you forget anything, people will be coming and going to visit you, you can always get them to pick anything you need up for you.

Re: when??

The recommendation for packing your bags (info from 3 different hospitals) is that you have your bags ready to go at about 34 weeks.

As for what to take.  You will need to take all your own stuff for showering, sanitary wear etc.  For bubs, most hospitals will provide nursery clothing but apparently, they all now ask that you take your own nappies and wipes, ours does and it is a real pain because they take up more room in the bag!  Suddenly, you go from one big bag to 2 of them!

In addition to your clothes etc, take something to do while you are in there.  It gets very boring and you can't count on other women being talkative too much.  i know, you should rest as much as possible after bubs is born, but the reality is, the first 12-24 hours, you will be on a very strange post baby high.  Having something to do when you cant sit still is a good idea as it might also encourage you to sleep quicker.

Re: when??

Hi

* 2 packs maternity pads

* A pack of breast pads - once your milk comes in - any time from day 2 -4, you will need them!

* Underwear - black or dark undies X 6, Maternity bras X 4 ( more undies as some may beyond salvaging!)

* Loose clothing - trackie dacks ( maternity wear as your tummy does not entirely magically disappear! ( darn!) are good. It can be cool in hospital, so long sleeved tops are good! P.J 's for night ( these are easier to lift than a nightie for all those middle of the night feeds!

* Socks! My feet were always freezing!!

* 4 singlets for bub*

* A few all in one suits for bub ( the Bonds ones with the fold down hands are good!)

* A couple of wraps for bub - I had some large ones made by my Mum which were excellent! Muslin or flannelette is good.

* The hospital supplies cloth nappies- however take a few disposables just in case! My bub had such and awful nappy rash from the hospital cloth nappies they thought she had a staph infection!

* A good supply of mags or a couple of good books is good!

* Your ipod loaded with good music ( also good for labour!)

* Normal tolietries.

Re: when??

Some hospitals provide pretty much everything, others provide nothing. Best to ask the midwife when you next go for an antenatal visit.

If the hospital provides nothing:

You can usually get by for bubs with a few items of clothing (Wondersuits are great, one item covers all), a pkt newborn nappies, nappy rash cream, pkt baby wipes, and a few little baby wraps/blankets. If you plan to formula feed you'll need all the extra stuff that goes with that too, bottles, etc.

For yourself, nursing pads, maternity pads (or incontinence pads, great to have as your pelvic floor muscles might not be so strong for a couple of days after birth and sneezing can get highly embarassing!), clothing, toothbrush... generally imagine going to a hotel room for a few nights only you're going to need nursing pads, maternity pads and a few extra pairs of undies.

As for when to pack, if all is going well, be prepared to go about a month before your due date. But don't panic, from the moment you realise you're in labour you'll have plenty of time to get your things together and get to the hospital - you'll have hours and hours and probably a few more hours.

Re: when??

ok

you need a few clothes. its up 2 u weather u go nightly/pj but most like you to wear clothes.

heaps of undies as u will bleed like never before

2 packs of pads maternity are good. i just used the super ultra thins.

some clothes for bubs

dummy if u want

bottles if u choose that and infant formual

book/mag

writing stuff as u might want to write your story of birth too keep for them

mobile or heaps of coins for the pay phone

blanket for bubs

ask ur hospital as some require u to bring nappies

breast pads

i think that is all u need. i had mine ready at 6 months and sitting by my front door and i used to put it in the car when i went out cause u never know when u are going to go.

good luck dannii

Re: when??

They should provide a list. Have it packed maybe from about 34 weeks. You'll probably be more comfy in day clothes like trackies etc. you'll need a few days worth(about 4) toiletries, clothes for bub to go home in, disposible nappies(hospitals usually only use cloth) and wipes. You might want something to read(very boring in hospital) money for phone. thats all i can think of off the top of my head. Each hospital is slightly different so its best to check with them.

Re: when??

I just used incontinence pants, never had a leak, and went through them like normal pads during a normal period. They're great things for birth time!
