Cleaning baby's teeth

My son is 9mths and has 2 bottom teeth, I was told at my 6 and 8 mth check up to just get a damp face washer and rub back and front of the teeth.  How do you do it especially if having difficulty getting your finger in his mouth!

How do you clean your baby's teeth??  Should I get a toothbrush?

Re: Cleaning baby's teeth

As soon as my youngest got his first teeth I got a 'baby' toothbrush and let him play with it. He chews on it daily and is quite easy to give his teeth a little brush at bath time as he is used to it being in his mouth. i don't use toothpaste as I don't see how that could help at the moment. He is a little too young to understand how to spit it out!

Re: Cleaning baby's teeth

The starter tooth brushes are fantastic, they come in a set of 3 & are great for getting baby used to having their teeth cleaned - I used them for both my boys when they started getting teeth & my 14 month old has just graduated to a "real" toothbrush with toothpaste.

Re: Cleaning baby's teeth

I gave my son a toothbrush when he got his first tooth. We let him play with it in the bath then we brush his teeth just before he gets out of the bath. We didn't start using toothpaste till he was well over 1. He is 2 1/2 now and it is the first thing he asks for in the bath. He can now brush his teeth really well and we only have to brush them ourselves sometimes.

Hope this helps.

Hi Angie

The facewasher can work, but not if you cant get your fingers in his mouth LOL

I got a 3 toothbrush starter set for Austin from big W, it cost about $10 and it has 3 stages of tooth brushes. The first one is like a rubber thing, and i let Austin chew on it for a few days and then while i was bathing him, we played "open up and brushy brushy brushy" He like the game now and quite often chews on it himself.

The second brush is still rubber, but in the shape of bristles and the third one is an actual brush.

Hope this helps, Cass xx

Re: Cleaning baby's teeth

Get a toothbrush. I started at 4 months with those gum brushes so the boys got used to the feeling of something in their mouth. You could also let him hold the tooth brush and do it in the mirror. At this age I would just use water though and not toothpaste yet :)

Re: Cleaning baby's teeth

I got my kids a toothbrush as soon as teeth started showing. They have special ones for your bub's age. I tried the wet face washer but I had the same problems, I could never get it into their mouth enough to clean! Mind you, I still struggled a bit with a toothbrush. They obviously thought the feeling was a bit weird, and would chomp down on the toothbrush so I couldn't move it! I just did the best I could, which is better than nothing at all.

One of the things I did was give my kids the toothbrush sometimes and then brush my own teeth so they could watch and copy what I did.

Re: Cleaning baby's teeth

Just do the best you can with a face towel and try not to obsess - brushing those 2 teeth now is not a great predictor of how many cavities your baby will have later.

To tell you the truth, I didn't start brushing my son's teeth until he had them all at around 18 months. He is now 3 years old and no cavities in sight! (knock on wood) Start obsessing about teeth brushing when your baby starts eating a lot of sweet stuff.
