Booking In

Just wondering when you all booked in at the hospital when you were pregnant. I for the life of me can't remember when it was (blame it on the baby brain) but I will be 18 weeks on Wednesday. Do you just go to the GP or do you ring the hospital?

Re: Booking In

Your Doctor should arrange all that, or Midwife

Re: Booking In

I found out that I was pregnant at just over 7 weeks, after a GP visit and ultrasound.  My GP wrote me a referral and got me to contact the hospital almost straight away and they took over my prenatal care from there, which included booking in at admissions on my very first visit which was about a week later.

Re: Booking In

Can't really remember, but I share cared with the hospital and my GP for the last one, so one month at the hospital one month to my doc. Hospital did all the bloods and scans. But it was probably about 12 weeks.

Re: Booking In

I think it depends on where you live and which way you go.

I went through the birth centre for both of my girls.   The first time I got in when I called at about 6 weeks. The second time I called them up at 5 weeks pregnant and they had no room and I had to go on the waiting list.  Luckily I got in in the end.

I suggest to at least make a phone call to the hospital and ask.  They should be able to tell you how they work.

Re: Booking In

Not sure where you live but it seemed to change for each baby for me!   iIthink book in as soon as you can.  With my first anti-natal visit i was booked in but everytime the procedure seemed to change, i would either have to fax the doctor referal through or phone to make an appointment.  Definatly phone the hospital and get booked in now to avoid disappointment if they are full.

Re: Booking In

Book in now and then you wont have to worry. Sometimes the hospital of your choice can be full and you might have to book in somewhere else. This has happened to me in Sydney.  Also, they like to do a scan at about 18 weeks for dates etc. You need a referral letter from your doctor that you take to the clinic. allow up to 2 hours for the first visit (lots of paper work).

Re: Booking In

I'll be doing mine in the next few weeks, but I've left it really late.  Usually, you need ultrasound and blood test results from your gp and a referral for the hospital.  You should also have a pregnancy record book too that you will need to take to every appointment and have with you when you have bubs.  With my first pregnancy with Les (the one that got a way) we did this at 8 weeks.  Same with our oldest and 2nd.  The rest, well, I got a little slack and it got later and later.  Oops.

As long as the hospital gets to see you before bubs is born, then they are happy.

Re: Booking In

I went public so once the doctor established I was pregnant he booked me in for ante natal appointments and a ultra sound at about 20 weeks. Then you don't need to go back to the doctor just to the hospital if it has that facility. All my blood tests etc. was done there. They had a special ante natal clinic joined to the hospital.

Re: Booking In

THis is what I mean. For appt and stuff. Cos I have had the 13 week scan at the hospital and haven't heard back about coming back in for the 20 week scan! Plus I think it was about then I started the appointments where they measure you and listen to the heart beat. I am getting excited hehe

Re: Booking In

Your suppose to be going in for monthly apps wether it be at yur gp or widwife..So what usually happens is when you go for your apps the doc/midwife give you the referal for the 20week scan..If you havnt been seeing anyone just got to your gp and ask for a referal to a clinic for the u/s..Also if you have had them?? all your blood test results and previous feedback about your scans needs to be sent to the hospital you are choosing to give birth in.Since 12weeks every visit i have im measured and the heart beat is listened too.My next app is 15th april and now my urine will be getting tested every visit.. Kust get to yur gp asap and get all your info sent off to your hospital, dont leave it too late cos it can get stressful when they stuff app dates up ect.

Re: Booking In

I was booked into my hospital at home from 13 weeks, but because I ended up stuck in Sydney and couldn't get to my hospital 1000+kms away, I ended up booking in to the hospital closest to me a week before Danny was born.

I just went directly to the hospital to sort it out both times. Didn't need any referrals or anything.

Seriously though, if you're in labour and you rock up to a hospital that you're not booked into, what are they going to do? Make you give birth in the car park? Not likely. I have a friend who has lots of kids and she never booked in anywhere, she just turned up in labour to the nearest hospital at the time. LOL It is better to book in if you can however. They're more willing to keep you for a few more days if you need it when you're booked in.

Re: Booking In

i was 12 weeks. but i went through a midwifery and it had minimal docotor interferance. u saw the gp 2 times to make sure everything was ok, but the midwivies did everything else.

but i assume u just ring the hospital and inquire.

good luck
