Opinions please

My eldest, Jess (she's 13) has been sick for a week with coughing, sore throat, throwing up, & fevers. I took her to the doctor on Friday who gave her antibiotics & a ventolin in haler. (She's been getting a fever everyday day since last Wednesday).

It is now Sunday & she is no better. Yesterday she kept a bit of food down. Today she had toast for lunch &, not long ago, brought it back up. Her temp is up again, too.

Any other times any of my kids have had similar symptoms they don't last so long, especially once on antibiotics. Her chest is sore from the coughing spasms, too.

Has anyone had similar to this? She wants to go to school tomorrow but I doubt she'll be able to (she had all last week off). I'm not sure if I should take her back to the doctor or wait a bit longer. What do you think?

Re: Opinions please

I think a trip back to the doctors is a good idea. She may have Glandular fever. My daughter caught this last year, it totaly knocked her off her feet, she also felt sick with it. I have posted a couple of web pages that may be of help.

Re: Opinions please

Put VICKS on the botom of her feet and then put on socks.  that will help with the coughing.     I do it to my son when he has a cough and it really does help.

Hope it works for you!

Re: Opinions please

Thanks everyone. I've been thinking bout the doctor I took her to on Fri. He said he seemed to think it was viral, rather than bacterial, but gave her the antibiotic simply because her illness had been going all week. To me, that's not good enough. I mean, he's just said here, take these, without really knowing what is wrong with her! So will definately take her back to another doctor tomorrow.

Re: Opinions please

Take her back to the doctors and make sure you request to see a different doctor that way you are getting a second opinion, I also agree with the antibiotics thing also ask for some anti-sickness tablets.

Re: Opinions please

I had all those symptoms last year, and had to return to my Doctor that i end up with Phenomunia(sp) . But i couldnt eat. so didnt have the throwing up part,.

So from there he/she will most likely give her a breathing test. a  powdery inhaler, and most likely a stronger antibotics..

In the mean time while waiting to see the doctor, have her sit in a steamy room, and have a VAPORISER(sp) and have her inhale the fumes from that...(Eucalyptus oil)

All the best with it all, and i know how she feels, and hope she feels better soon,...

Re: Opinions please

Anti-biotics kill bacterial infections, but won't do much for a viral infection. That could be the problem. I'd check back with the doctor.

Re: Opinions please

If it was my daughter i would be taking her back to the doctors, especially with continuing fever and vommitting....maybe the she needs a change of antibotics and also a blood test done to see if the problem can be picked up.

There is alot of virus's going around at present.

Do hope she starts to feel better soon.

Regards Janice

Re: Opinions please

I think you need to take her to the dr again ASAP and explain the symptoms (I don't think I'd be sending her to school). I think they need to rule out certain illnesses, as she's been having fevers which means theres an infection that needs dealing with. I had a lot of time off once when I was around that age cos I had a lung infection (I can't remember exactly what it was called but similar symptoms to what you described).

Re: Opinions please

Some kid's don't respond to certain antibiotics. I had that happen to my oldest. It can sometimes be as simple as changing medication, or it could be something else. She may be ablr to get an injection to stop her from vomiting also. But I would definately go back to the same doctor, as long as you're happy with him/her.

I hope she gets better soon.

Re: Opinions please

i suggest that you take her to the emergency department or visit another gp as she is still young and it is better to b safe than sorry even if you called the after hour doctors (if there is one close) and explain to the

Re: Opinions please

I would probably take her back to the doc tomorrow if she is still no better. They may have to change the antibiotics if they aren't starting to have an effect. Either that or they will tell you to wait a couple more days. If it is a very bad case the antibiotics may just take that little bit longer to start to work.

So long as she is having the medication on a regular basis, they should start working.
